CD Projekt Red Release Official Hotfix to Fix AVX Issue for Cyberpunk 2077 Players On PC

A tweet from publisher CD Projekt Red’s customer support team has just announced that they have released a hotfix for the most recent issue that has been plaguing Cyberpunk 2077 ever since its 1.3 patch. Patch 1.3, which was rolled out on August 18, 2021 introduced a bug that causes CPUs without AVX support to experience fatal crashes to players, rendering the game unplayable on a wide number of processors, affecting both modern and older-generation chips.

The tweet states the following:

“We released a hotfix for #Cyberpunk2077 on PC. It removes the use of AVX instruction set from the game executable which prevents crashes that occurred on older processors not supporting AVX. Game version is not changed by this hotfix and remains 1.3.”

This was not the first time this same issue appeared in the highly polarizing role-playing title. Users on Reddit have reported that the specific AVX issue was already present and fixed in the past updates before patch 1.3. It’s a possibility that due to the patch being a particularly large one, this may have been overlooked. At the end of the day, there’s no way for us to know what really happened behind the scenes. It is also important to note that when patch 1.3  was rolled out and the issue was discovered, Nexusmods user jensandree has rolled out a fix for it in less than a week.

Aside from this game-breaking hitch, patch 1.3 also brought numerous major changes, fixes, improvements, and even a couple of free content to the game. Some of these are additional cosmetics (Alternative Johnny Silverhand appearance and an Archer Quartz “Bandit”, a custom vehicle that will be available either for reward or purchase). Improvements on the game’s minimap, NPC behavior according to difficulty, and even larger balance-centered changes regarding crafting and the world’s in-game economy.

Cyberpunk 2077, which was released on December 10th, 2020 was perhaps one of the most polarizing, AAA-title launches in recent memory. Plagued by performance issues and complaints regarding its promised and delivered content from day 1, CD Projekt Red has since gone on a campaign to keep its head down and stick to its roadmap to provide improvements to the game. Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available to play for Windows on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia with versions for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to follow before the end of 2021.
