GeForce Now is Coming to LG’s WebOS Allowing You To Stream Games Directly To Your Smart TV

It’s no debate that LG smart TVs are the hottest TVs on the market right now. From cutting-edge hardware to intuitive software, it seems like they’ve got the formula nailed down. While the tech behind their OLEDs has been perfected to a tee, without the webOS software powering it all, it may as well just be a fancy prototype. Where most modern TVs ship with some iteration of Android/Google TV and share the same bleeding-edge hardware, LG’s TVs are set apart most by their software. And that software is about to get a massive improvement once again.

GeForce Now on LG TVs

Announced jointly by NVIDIA and LG, GeForce Now is finally hitting select models of LG’s 2021 lineup of TVs running webOS. The companies have joint hands in developing an app for GeForce Now and, in turn, LG will become the first manufacturer to get a dedicated GeForce Now app for its TVs. Keep in mind that GeForce Now is not available on the Google Play Store that’s available on Android/Google TV.

GeForce Now for LG TVs was actually announced all the way back in January when the company revealed it would be bringing two streaming giants, Google Stadia and NVIDIA GeForce Now, to LG TVs in 2021. That announcement initially promised a release for the second half of this year and it looks like LG is keeping its word. However, as things stand, no update for Google Stadia on LG TVs has come out since and with the state of Stadia at the moment, things are not looking good for Google’s game-streaming service.

Circling back to GeForce Now, the app will be available in beta on the Content Store in select LG TV models. The exact list of compatible TVs will be announced at a later date, but LG has mentioned that it will be available on “select 2021 LG 4K OLED, QNED Mini LED and NanoCell TV models in 80 markets“. The beta is starting this week so make sure to check the Content Store if your TV is supported.

All GeForce Now tiers will be supported inside the webOS app including the recently-announced RTX 3080 tier. That being said, the resolution and frame-rate is capped to only 1080p 60FPS. You cannot play at 4K resolution on the webOS app, or any other app, for that matter. GeForce Now’s 4K resolution is only supported on the NVIDIA Shield TV.

Currently, 35+ GeForce Now games will be playable on LG TVs, including Destiny 2, Crysis Remastered trilogy, and Rocket League. Moreover, LG believes this is the best large-screen gaming experience there is. It’s important to note that several LG OLEDs are NVIDIA BFG (Big Format Display) certified which, according to NVIDIA, is the best gaming experience available on large displays, as well. At the moment, only the 2021 lineup of LG’s 4K OLED, QNED Mini LED, and NanoCell TVs will be getting the GeForce Now app, and even though the app is in beta, it should be fully functional and operative on compatible models.

Digging a little deeper into the fine print, we find that alongside a compatible 2021 LG TV, you’ll need to be up to date with the latest fall webOS update and the latest LG TV browser update, as well. Popular Bluetooth and USB controllers, such as the Dualshock 4 and Xbox Wireless Controller, are fully supported along with many more. No keyboard and mouse support, however, those will only work in the menus for navigation. Lastly, LG also recommend to use a wired connection or 5Ghz wireless with at least 15Mbps for 720p at 60 FPS, and 25Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS.
