Zoom camera not working? Here’s how to Fix

You’ve scheduled a meeting but as soon as it begins you realize your Zoom camera isn’t working and what’s especially frustrating is that you’ve no idea whether the problem is on your end or zooms. You are not alone a large volume of users are reportedly suffering the same problem.

Zoom Camera not Working
Webcam not working on zoom.

There could be a couple of reasons for your camera not working on zoom with relatively simple fixes. Here’s a list of potential culprits preventing the Zoom camera from working.

  • Loose Connection – An external Webcam with a loose connection will sometimes lead to Windows not being able to detect the device, thus zoom’s camera will not work.
  • Faulty USB port – If the problem doesn’t lie in a loosely connected webcam it could stem from the webcam being connected to a faulty USB port.
  • Outdated Zoom client – An outdated client means that the latest patches aren’t installed which could lead to issues such as your zoom camera not working.
  • Outdated Camera Drivers – Outdated Camera drivers can be the prime reason behind your zoom camera not working.
  • Multiple Cameras plugged in – If you have more than one camera device plugged in then zoom may be using the wrong camera making it seem like your zoom camera isn’t working.
  • App permission on Windows – Windows has a privacy feature regarding camera use on your computer, if you haven’t agreed to it windows won’t allow your camera to work.
  • Faulty Webcam – If your webcam itself is damaged it may not be detected by your computer or zoom.

Now that we have a list of possible causes of we can go over how to fix them.

Secure Connections

A very fast, simple yet effective troubleshooting method for any hardware-related problem is to ensure the cable is securely connected to the USB port. Simply Unplug and promptly replug your webcam cable into your USB ports. Afterward, turn on Zoom and start a meeting to check if the camera is working.

If this doesn’t fix your issue then move on to the next Fix.

Swap USB Ports

The USB port itself may be faulty or broken which is leading to your webcam not working. To check simply plug the webcam into a different port, turn on zoom and check if that fixes the issue.

If the problem persists then move on to the next fix.

Update Zoom Client

Running an outdated and unsupported build of zoom client means that your zoom doesn’t have the latest bug fixes and compatibility patches which can potentially prevent the zoom camera from working. Even when Zoom automatically updates your client sometimes the client isn’t properly updated which leads to problems such as your camera not working.

To prevent such an issue we need to perform a fresh install of the latest zoom client, which means we must first uninstall Zoom.

Uninstall Zoom

For Windows, this can be done via the control panel or through the start menu. On Mac OS you can uninstall zoom by moving them to the ‘trash’ app.

  1. Press Windows Key to open the search menu and type in zoom.
Search for Zoom in the start menu
  2. Right-click on Zoom and click uninstall
Uninstall zoom from the start menu.

Note: Unlike on Windows 10, clicking the Uninstall button from the context menu on Windows 11 will take you directly to the Programs and Feature menu. Once inside, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the uninstallation.

Installing Latest Zoom Client

After uninstallation is complete, search ‘Download zoom’ on your preferred web browser. Download and install the latest version from zoom.us. After installation, turn on zoom, start a meeting and check if your camera is working or not.

If your zoom camera still isn’t working then move on to the next Fix.

Update/install Camera drivers

Having outdated or simply not having any camera drivers installed can prevent your webcam from working properly. Update or install the latest camera drivers from your manufacturer’s website.

After installing/updating your drivers restart your computer and check zoom to see if the camera is working or not. If that doesn’t fix your camera then move on to the next fix.

Use Correct Camera

Having multiple webcams plugged in can cause windows/zoom to start using the wrong camera thus making it seem like the zoom camera isn’t working.

A quick fix would be to simply disconnect any extra webcams connected webcams. However, if you prefer not to disconnect anything or if you have an inbuilt camera on your device you can simply choose which camera to use from inside zoom.

  1. Open a meeting in zoom.
  2. At the bottom left, click on the small arrow next to ‘record video‘. This will open a list of all available devices, simply choose the camera you want to use.
Select the webcam you want to use.

If switching webcams didn’t fix the issue or you didn’t have multiple webcams move on to the next fix.

Give Zoom Permissions to use webcam

As said before windows has privacy and security features that disallow apps from using your webcam. Insufficient permissions will prevent your zoom camera from working. To allow zoom to use your webcam follow the steps below:

  1. Open search bar, type, and open settings.
Open settings from the start menu
  2.  In settings navigate to the privacy and security tab on the left-hand side and click on ‘camera’.
Navigate to the camera in privacy and security.
  3.  Under ‘Let apps access your camera’ allow Zoom to access your camera.
Allow zoom to access your camera.

Afterward, starts meeting in zoom and test to see if the camera is working or not, If not then move on to the next fix.

Replace or repair webcam

If all else fails then it’s likely that it’s a hardware issue and you may have to repair or replace your webcam. If you have an upcoming meeting and need a webcam without having to resort to using your mobile phone you can substitute your phone as a webcam.
