Upcoming AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT Could be the First GPU on TSMC’s 6nm Process

AMD is going to launch two lower mid-range Navi24 GPUs next year, the Radeon RX 6500 XT and the RX 6400. While the RX 6500 XT will see a retail launch, the RX 6400 will be exclusively available for OEMs. While we already know a lot about the upcoming AMD GPUs from previous leaks, a recent rumor (via VideoCardz) suggests the two upcoming GPUs will use TSMC’s 6nm node. The more powerful siblings, AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT and the RX 6600 use TSMC’s 7nm node, and most likely, even the upcoming GPUs will be manufactured by TSMC, but on the 6nm node.

The new 6-nanometer node is said to leverage their new extreme ultraviolet (EUV)a lithography expertise they have gained from their 7nm+ process technology which is currently in risk production. Compared to their normal (DUV) 7-nanometer node, TSMC is reporting an 18% higher logic density improvement while maintaining full design rule compatibility. – Fuse.wikichip

Specifications

AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT will be a lower mid-range card, replacing the last-gen RX 5500XT. The upcoming GPU will feature 1024 shader cores and 16 raytracing acceleration cores. The card will also feature 4 GB GDDR6 memory with a 64-bit memory interface. Power consumption should be around the 100W mark, with a 6-pin connector. Performance wise, the RX 6500 XT could be close to the RX 590, although we will have to wait for the official launch for exact figures.

AMD Radeon RX 6400 will be an entry-level offering exclusively for OEMs. This will probably replace the RX 5300 XT, which was also an OEM-only offering. The card will feature 768 shader cores and 12 raytracing acceleration cores. It will also feature 4 GB DDR6 memory with a 64-bit memory interface. Power consumption should be around the 50W mark, and the GPU won’t require a power connector.

Official launch dates haven’t surfaced yet, although rumors suggest a January 2022 launch for the RX 6500 XT and March 2022 for the RX 6400.
