XMG, a Germany-based laptop manufacturer has just announced its roadmap for upcoming products slated for a 2022 release. While there are many standard offenders here, such as the latest offerings from AMD and Intel along with NVIDIA‘s GPUs, it’s actually the prospect of the first officially announced Intel Arc laptop that has us excited.
XMG has issued a press release stating they’re working on several different product lines, including XMG Fusion. Fusion laptops featuring 12th Gen Alder Lake processors will be releasing in Q1 of 2022 and they’ll come equipped with NVIDIA RTX 30-series mobile GPUs. However, the company is also planning on releasing AMD versions of its Fusion laptops with the red team’s latest Ryzen 6000 “Rembrandt” APUs. These will come later down the line after the Alder Lake notebooks, expect the end of the second quarter of 2022 at the earliest.
Now, of course the real kicker here is the future considerations for Fusion laptops. While there hasn’t been any official announcements per se yet, XMG’s roadmap indicates that they are indeed working on bringing Intel Arc to their mobile platform by the end of the third quarter. This is a bit surprising since so far we’ve excepted Arc Alchemist mobile to launch before it makes its way over to desktop. So, if that’s true then we might have to wait till the end of the year for desktop Alchemist GPUs.
We will have some opportunities to feature Intel Arc Graphics in some future models, but those are still in the planning stage and cannot be confirmed at this time.
As for Radeon graphics on XMG’s laptops, the future looks a little bit more uncertain as the company says it “might” sell Radeon RX 6000M laptops this year but doesn’t explicitly mention so. I’d say the possibility of this happening is quite low and for now we should keep our hopes up for only NVIDIA and Intel’s discrete graphics. But, hey, at least AMD’s Rembrandt-H APUs have those sweet RDNA 2 iGPUs inside to fulfil your desire to serve the red team.
There are other laptops on the roadmap as well, including some real exciting options. XMG as a brand is known for providing a lot of value when it comes to their products. They’re kind of like the Xiaomi of laptop brands; great quality and all the features but an affordable cost. You can check out XMG’s full blog post announcing these new laptops here. XMG roadmap 2022: Updates of further model series and AMD Ryzen 6000
In another detailed news posting, XMG has shared an overview of its own product plans for the first half of the year. The presentation of the 17.3-inch XMG NEO 17 could follow at the end of the second quarter at the earliest. In addition, the company plans to offer NEO laptops with both the latest Intel and AMD CPUs, as it did with the 2021 model generation. XMG currently expects a generation based on the Ryzen 6000H towards the end of the second quarter at the earliest, but the effective availability date will be determined by the availability of the new CPUs.
In contrast to the XMG NEO which is designed for maximum mobile performance, the update of the XMG PRO model series offers a somewhat more balanced concept. The laptops will feature a fundamentally redesigned chassis, which is slightly thicker compared to the very slim predecessor, in return for more performance. The top model will feature an RTX 3080 Ti operating at a TGP of 155 watts (2021 model: max. 105 watts). Compared to the NEO, the new PRO offers a slightly more versatile connectivity, including a dedicated Mini DisplayPort directly connected to the dGPU. Due to the expected shortage of DDR5 RAM, XMG is planning the PRO with DDR4 despite the update to 12th gen Intel Core. The laptops are expected from the end of the first quarter.
Another highlight is coming with the follow-up to the long-running XMG FUSION 15 from 2019: The upcoming XMG FUSION 16 is even more trimmed for thinness and lightness and will feature a 16:10 display, among other things.
In the upper performance mid-range, represented by the XMG CORE with RTX 3060, XMG wants to stick to the dualism of an Intel- and AMD-based model, just like with the NEO, but further details on this plan are not expected until the second quarter. The series could also be upgraded with a new magnesium casing to reduce weight.
An update of the APEX model series with Ryzen 6000 CPUs is scheduled for the end of the second and beginning of the third quarter at the earliest. Alongside the NEO, the APEX is planned as the second laptop series with compatibility for the OASIS liquid cooling system. In addition, an as yet unspecified XMG FUSION with Intel’s dedicated Arc graphics unit is also casting its shadow.
