AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 Based on Temporal Upscaling May Get Announced at GDC 2022

A couple of days ago, AMD shared the list of the sponsored sessions they will hold at this year’s Game Developer Conference discussing various different topics related to graphics in gaming. One of those sessions particularly jumped out as interesting as it was potentially hinting at a major development or update announcement pertaining to AMD’s existing upscaling tech for consumers.

Titled “Next-Generation Image Upscaling for Games“, this session at GDC 2022 will focus on AMD’s latest breakthroughs in upscaling technology and innovation, and present research data that can help improve the gaming experience for everyone. While the session does mention next-gen technology, nowhere does it explicitly state “FSR” which means we had to speculate with a grain of salt.

This is because, up until now, the next version of FidelityFX Super Resolution was expected to release alongside RDNA 3 GPUs which are slated for a Q4 2022 release. Such a big jump in architecture would allow AMD to leverage proprietary hardware inside the GPUs to boost FSR and make it more competitive with the like of NVIDIA‘s DLSS 2.0 and Intel‘s upcoming XeSS upscaling tech.

FSR 2.0 is coming

All that being said, latest reports suggest differently. Such that the developer of CapFrameX, the benchmarking and monitoring software, claims to have seen a working demo of what is being dubbed “FSR 2.0“. This is the first time the next generation of FSR has been mentioned anywhere. The following tweet details what CapFrameX saw in the FSR 2.0 demo and it looks pretty exciting.

The biggest takeaway here is that second-gen FSR is based on temporal upscaling which is a complete U-turn from the spatial upscaling currently used by FSR. Temporal upscaling is the same kind of technique that NVIDIA uses for its DLSS and what Intel will use with XeSS, however, apparently AMD’s implementation will not require any hardware-based AI acceleration, such as Tensor cores inside RTX 20 and 30-series cards.

This makes it so that FSR 2.0 would work on a wide variety of GPUs from all vendors because specialized hardware is not necessary. Though the exact generations/architectures that would be supported are not highlighted, this does give FSR 2.0 a leg up over the competition. AMD could be doing something similar to XeSS where Intel is using the DP4a instruction set to enable support within the shader cores, eliminating the need for proprietary AI-acceleration or hardware.

Apart from that, the tweet also says that AMD is claiming FSR 2.0 results to be even better than native, which is admittedly a little hard to believe considering there is no AI involved. We’ll have to wait and see the performance ourselves for that one. Moreover, impressive image quality is also mentioned which is to be expected. FSR 1.0, even though not particularly groundbreaking, has already been impressively sneaking its way into more and more games, enriching the experience for budget-oriented gamers.

GDC 2022 is only two weeks away at this point with AMD’s next-gen upscaling session to be hosted on March 23rd at precisely 10:30 AM PST. We might get our first glimpse of FSR 2.0 in the flesh at this event, though it should be noted that GDC sessions require prior registration which not everyone has access to. However, all of AMD’s sessions at GDC will be available on the GPUOpen website a day later (March 24th), at 4PM GMT.

AMD’s current version of FidelityFX Super Resolution already works on rival GPUs from NVIDIA and older AMD SKUs breathing new life into dying cards. With FSR 2.0 AMD could be looking at extending this lead by improving their USP even more. Anything that can squeeze more performance out of older GPUs is appreciated, especially when it comes at no extra cost. It will be interesting to see how FSR 2.0 pans out in comparison to the established players.
