Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, has stated that the business will not prohibit selling games with NFTs on its Epic Games Store platform, contending that it is improper to “interfere” with the way game developers create their works.
In an article published on Wednesday, Mojang, the Microsoft-owned studio behind Minecraft, stated that it has no plans to support NFTs in the game. A Twitter user questioned Sweeney about whether Epic would adopt a similar attitude to which Tim replied:
Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, and you are free to decide whether to play them. I believe stores and operating system makers shouldn’t interfere by forcing their views onto others. We definitely won’t.

Sweeney clarified later in the thread that the company does have editorial guidelines, but that NFTs do not currently violate them.
Over 2,700 developers were surveyed for the Game Developers Conference’s annual State of the Game Industry Report, and 70% of them stated they had little interest in incorporating NFTs into their games. As part of a broader slowdown in the cryptocurrency market, which had declined in value from around $3 trillion in November 2021 to less than $1 trillion, NFT sales plummeted to a 12-month low in June.
Epic’s stance on NFTs is one that matters. As one of the largest players in the modern gaming landscape, by choosing not to ban NFTs (at least for now), the company has jumped over to the pro-blockchain camp. It will be interesting to see how Epic’s current view on the matter shifts over the course of the next few years, as Web3 comes into shape.
