The Outlast Trials Closed Beta Trailer Announced at Gamescom 2022, Features Story Content and Gameplay Footage

You might have heard us reiterating ourselves that The Outlast Trials is coming to Gamescom 2022 for the millionth time now, but it’s finally here. We got some gameplay reveals, a vague look at the story, along with the announcement of an Open Beta date for Halloween. Let’s get right into today’s news.

The Outlast Trials Gameplay Trailer Revealed Along With the Closed Beta

The newest entry into the franchise, the Outlast Trials, will be playable this Halloween at Gamescom 2022, but it’ll be a closed beta set for October 28 to November 1. Sadly, we haven’t gotten our hands on a release date for the game. The co-op survival horror game was set for an Opening Night Live Presentation for Gamescom 2022 today.

It was vaguely introduced that the Outlast Trials will feature an open beta, but not much information was provided to fans and the gaming community to exactly participate in the beta. The closed look at the game will exclusively be available for PC via Steam. Red Barrels kept quiet about this but told fans to stay tuned for further updates in the future. The Outlast Trials is a prequel to the franchise.

The Outlast Trials is bringing co-op multiplayer to the series for the first time. It’s not apparent how the co-op multiplayer will work, but from what little was provided, players will either face off against each other or help each other to solve a mix of puzzles, which sounds quite a bit similar to the SAW series.

The Murkoff Corporation is back again, and this time, it aims to prey on those that have no purpose in life and maims and tortures volunteers in what appears to be a cult-like asylum. The game’s story takes place in the cold war era and allows up to four players to participate in and survive a number of strange experiments after being abducted by the Murkoff corporation.

The game features an atmosphere reminiscent of the first entry of the franchise with its decrepit and eerie corridors and tight spaces. We’ll also get to meet a number of pursuers too, which appear to feature a masked pursuer and a monster akin to the Wife outfit for Leatherface. The pursuers don’t really stand out asides from the Leatherface-esque monster due to the sheer resemblance to the character, which might have been intended by Red Barrel Studios.

We’ll also get to see numerous decapitated, maimed and mutilated bodies across the game, which is pretty cool but all the while disturbing. The trailer featured some locations which might be accessible in the upcoming closed beta, such as Futterland and a theatre named Root Canal. Players might flee and visit these locations to escape the clutches of the Murkoff corporation, where each of the different pursuers is located, but that’s mere speculation on our part.

We also saw the Leatherface-esque character chopping up body parts in a basement surrounded by hanging body parts and a dressed-up mannequin. There’s also a church that features strange nun-like monsters, which could be a future pursuer that we haven’t been introduced to yet. But that’s not all. Players will also find themselves inside a police station being chased by a pursuer dressed up as a cop.

The iconic night vision camera is making a return, too, which makes the game a whole lot scarier in pitch-dark environments. A short second also showcased an X-ray vision feature that allows players to see the silhouette of pursuers. We’re also getting a new mechanic for the movement and traversal system of Outlast. We’ve already seen this in past games, but the slide mechanic is probably coming to the game, or it could’ve been a cutscene. This is mere speculation.

The game seems to revolve around the early practices of brainwashing individuals over at the Murkoff corporations as players are coerced to remake themselves with the words REMAKE YOURSELF splattered across an old TV monitor. The Mukroff corporation abducts test subjects and refers to them as Reagents to conduct cruel experiments on them for Unkown Reasons.

The locations we’ve seen so far are actually warehouses connected via tunnels to in a secret Murkoff facility. The warehouses consist of life-sized recreations of real-world environments. There’s also a sleep room where Reagants return to rest. The reagants can also interact with employees to obtain items from them.

Red Barrels had to say this about the game:

“Set in the era of the Cold War, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good folks at the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control. In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals will be challenged, your endurance tested, and your sanity crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit.

Red Barrels invites you to experience mind-numbing terror, this time with friends. Work together and maybe you’ll survive The Outlast Trials. It’s always better to shit your pants in good company.”

From what we can confer, this is Project MkUltra in the works that has been mentioned numerous times in previous Outlast games. The game is set in the cold war era, which is the same time the MKUltra experiments took place.

The reception for the game has been incredibly positive so far, with the Closed Beta Trailer garnering over 1000 likes in just two hours. The game looks pretty promising so far, but how will the co-op play out? What happens if the game experiences connectivity issues and server problems? Red Barrels should have some decent servers. Else the experience might become subpar.

Fans are pretty excited for what transpires in terms of the story in the Outlast Trials as players get to explore the secret underground Murkoff facility performing trials and tests for Project MKUltra.

There are lots of things still left unanswered by Red Barrels Studios at Gamescom 2022. When will the game officially release? How can players access the closed beta? Which platforms is the game coming to aside from PC? So many questions are left unanswered. We hope Red Barrels gives up the updates we need like they promised to.

The Outlast Trials is currently scheduled for a release on Windows PC. It’s still undecided if the game is coming to the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and Xbox One.

And that’s pretty much it for today’s news. Are you excited for the Outlast Trials or straight-up terrified? Let us know in the comments below. We upload daily on Appuals, so stay tuned for more. Till then, see you later and goodbye.
