Dead Space Remake is Coming to PlayStation 4

Dead Space is a survival horror game that takes place in deep space. The original game was released almost 15 years ago, in 2008, and has become a legacy.

The basic synopsis of the game is; humans have exhausted all the resources on Earth, and now they are on a hunt to find a new habitable planet (I’m wondering why the synopsis is scarily relatable in 2022). While on the search, they come across an alien spacecraft USG Ishimura where things don’t work out according to plan, and the protagonist is stuck fighting the half-dead creatures.

The survival horror was well received at its launch and has created a loyal fan base. The elements that distinguish the game are its gory nature and claustrophobic environment; the narrow pathways of the spacecraft create terrific tension for the player.

Dead Space 3 is the last game released in the lineup in 2013. In July 2021, EA decided to revive the dormant franchise and announced with a short teaser that they were working on a remake of the original Dead Space.

Dev Streams And Interview

The remake was in the news shortly and gathered a massive hype around it. The Dead Space Remake is being developed by EA Motive on EA’s Frostbite Engine, and the game is built from the ground up. The developers have been transparent with the development process.

They are sharing all the improvements and changes they are making for the new game while keeping the real essence of the original game; through live streams on the official Dead Space YouTube Channel.

In an interview with IGN, Senior Producer Philippe Ducharme and Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola discuss How EA Motive is using next-gen tech to revive a horror classic. The EA Motive team shared that they are building the game from the ground up and completely utilizing the power of the latest tech while keeping the real feel of the original game:

In terms of visuals, sound, gameplay, everything, we are rebuilding all of these assets. We are not porting them; it’s not uprezzing the texture or adding more polygons to the model. It’s really rebuilding all these elements, shooting all the animations, et cetera.

The devs also revealed that there would be fewer or no loading screens to give the players a seamless, immersive experience:

We want to make that immersion even deeper with a fully interactive experience, from the start screen to the end credits. We don’t want anything to pull you out of the experience, and we don’t want any cuts, Campos Oriola said.

The team’s goals for the game are ambitious, and they are massively improving the remake, making it a unique experience on the latest hardware. However, they are strongly emphasizing keeping the original feeling there as fans remember it:

We wanted to use the sounds you’re used to as well and improve those sounds, and improve this immersion, so the sounds of the door that you’re hearing, the sound of the health bar, the sound of the creatures… we’re building on top of the original and recreating it, but [we] make sure it is true to the original and that we are honoring the legacy of the original game, Ducharme said.

Dead Space Remake First Gameplay Trailer

The game is now a few months away, and EA has released the first gameplay trailer for the Dead Space Remake; oh boy, they have nailed it with the improved visuals. The game is looking more gory and horrifying than ever.

The trailer reflects all the details that devs have been sharing in their interviews and Dev streams. However, the original game’s essence is still there. Nostalgia hits when Isaac cuts the limbs of a Necromorph with a plasma cutter in one of the scenes, and it looks nasty as it should. The gameplay trailer is incredible and gives a glimpse of what the game has in store for the fans.

Dead Space Remake is Coming to PlayStation 4

However, things have taken an interesting turn after PlayStation Latinoamérica uploaded Dead Space Remake’s trailer on their YouTube channel. The notable thing here is the tag ‘PS4’ they used in the trailer’s title.

According to the trailer’s title, the game is also coming to PS4, just a bolt out of the blue. There was no promotion of the game being a cross-gen, and there are also no hints of it coming to the Xbox One.

We only have this trailer as evidence that the game might be coming to last-gen consoles. It is hard to believe as the devs heavily emphasize the game being a next-gen exclusive and how they are utilizing the full potential of the latest hardware. The game is set to release on 27th January 2023.

As there is no other evidence of Dead Space Remake coming to last-gen or PS4, take this one with a grain of salt. We will update you if any further details are revealed about this rumor. Until then, let us know your thoughts in the comment section below. Are you excited to explore Ishimura again?
