Apex Legends Mobile to be Discontinued, Players Have 90 Days to Enjoy the Game before Complete Shutdown

In less than a year after its release, Respawn Entertainment has announced that the Apex Legends Mobile game will be shut down. The news was revealed as a part of Electronic Arts Q3 2023 financial report. The company, known for delivering consistently outstanding games to its players, has revealed that the content pipeline for the mobile game has fallen short of the company’s high standard for quality, quantity, and cadence. As a result, after months of working with their development partner (Tencent Lightspeed & Quantum Studios), a mutual decision has been made to sunset the game.

Starting today, January 31st, all real-money in-app purchases in the game will be disabled, and the game will be removed from webstores. However, players can still spend their existing Syndicate Gold and continue playing the whole game for the next 90 days until operations cease at 4 PM PDT on May 1st, 2023. This period of 90 days is designed to allow players to enjoy the game to its fullest and spend any remaining virtual currency before the servers go down.

Respawn, and the Apex Legends team remain excited about mobile as a platform and look forward to new opportunities to serve players in the future. Despite the disappointment of having to say goodbye to this game, the studio is proud of what they have created and grateful for the support of the Apex Legends community.

To help answer questions and provide support, Respawn has provided a FAQ with important information regarding the closure of the Apex Legends Mobile. This includes information on in-game purchases and virtual currency, as well as server shutdown and refund policies. The company understands that this decision may come as a surprise to many players, and they want to assure everyone that they are here to help and answer any questions they may have.

It’s important to note that this decision is platform-specific and does not impact the Apex Legends game on PC and consoles, which remains strong. The Apex Legends universe, characters, and stories will continue to be explored, and the company appreciates its players’ continued support and patience as they navigate these next steps. The company looks forward to sharing exciting updates about the franchise in the future and serving players on other platforms.

However, It appears that there may be a potential for Apex to be available on mobile devices in the future. During EA’s earnings call, CEO Andrew Wilson stated that they have decided to discontinue the current version of the game, but they have plans to bring a new and improved Apex experience to mobile devices in the future. He also mentioned that the mobile platform will be a key area of growth for the Apex franchise in the coming future.

Electronic Arts Has Also Cancelled Battlefield Mobile

Electronic Arts has decided to discontinue the development of its planned mobile game for the Battlefield franchise, which was announced in April 2021. The company explained in a news post on its website that it needed to make changes to meet the players’ expectations and deliver its vision for the franchise.

EA has taken steps to improve the Battlefield franchise, including putting Vince Zampella, the head of Respawn, in charge and developing a new narrative campaign with a new studio, Ridgeline Games for Battlefield 2042. The company focuses on improving Battlefield 2042 and on future Battlefield experiences.

EA’s mobile strategy for Battlefield and Apex appears to be centered around connecting these games to other games within their respective franchises. According to CEO Andrew Wilson, the most successful mobile games are those that are deeply connected to a broader franchise. He stated that the company’s goal is to create a single unified game experience that includes cross-progression, though not necessarily crossplay.

With regards to Battlefield Mobile, Wilson explained that they have paused development on the game to allow the company to better focus on their broader franchise strategy. The goal is to build a true cross-platform and immersive gaming experience around a reimagined Battlefield in the future.

We’ve also made the decision to stop the development of the current Battlefield mobile title. As the industry has evolved and our strategy to create a deeply connected Battlefield ecosystem has taken shape, we decided to pivot from the current direction to best deliver on our vision for the franchise and to meet the expectations of our players. We remain highly committed to unlocking Battlefield’s enormous potential.”
