The God of War franchise has always been known for its epic and unpredictable storyline, with each game bringing new challenges and surprises for its players. And the highly anticipated God of War Ragnarok is no exception. However, a recent interview has suggested that the game’s developers had different ideas for Kratos‘ fate in their initial plans.
In a recent interview with Sony Santa Monica‘s narrative director MinnMax, Matt Sophos addressed Kratos’ inevitable fate.
There was the earliest, earliest draft of an outline that we had come up with, that we took to [director Eric Williams where] Kratos died in the Thor fight at the very beginning of the game.
He was gonna die [but] it wasn’t a permanent death. What was going to happen [was that] he would get pulled out of Hell, essentially, by Atreus,”
While this may seem as something confidential, Matt said that he doesn’t care anymore as none of the plans made it to the final project. In addition, he said that everything he discussed is fan-fiction that may never see the light of the day.
Matt later elaborated on how Kratos’s survival became crucial to God of War Ragnarok’s theme, and that the ending was well thought out. He said:
As we were developing the story, we knew we wanted it to be about letting go and changing. Knowing that Norse mythology is all about fate and prophecy and everything, we wanted to say ‘that’s bullshit’,”
Irrespective of what the developers say, if they had gone ahead with their original plans, how would it have affected the story and the future of the franchise? Would fans have been willing to accept a new protagonist, or would they have demanded the return of Kratos?
