Google Planning to Launch its “Bard” AI-Integration on ChromeOS

Google has started working to bring Bard to ChromeOS, days after revealing its efforts on “Bard,” an AI-powered and Google Search improved chatbot.

With the advent of ChatGPT and the preview release of Microsoft’s new Bing, the use of AI chatbots has increased recently. On Monday, Google unveiled its own take on the conversational search experience, but the corporation was not yet prepared to make its “Bard” AI available for testing by the general public.

Today, Google gave us our first indications of how it would incorporate Bard into its products. A fresh batch of code modifications reveals that ChromeOS is getting ready to provide “Conversational Search” as an experimental feature. We assume that for the foreseeable future, this integration for Bard will only be accessible to those who opt-in in via the chrome:/flags page. However, ChromeOS has other active “Launcher experiments” you may explore.

Launcher experiment: conversational search.

Reading between the lines, “conversational search” already suggests what Google’s previous results concerning Bard have shown. According to the code, ChromeOS would replace the launcher’s built-in search functions, which search files, programs, and the web, with a discussion with Bard if you have the conversational search flag activated. This design may change before launch since it is still very much a work in progress.

Like Google Assistant does today, Bard will show up on Chromebooks as its own unique page of the ChromeOS bubble launcher. This page will have a scrollable chat history as well as a search box, which is likely used to start a new discussion.

It will be intriguing to watch how Google incorporates Bard or any other conversational experience into its current offerings. Although there is definitely a case to be made for Bard being linked with Assistant, it seems that in the instance of ChromeOS, Bard is replacing the launcher’s connectivity with Google Search directly.

In any scenario, it doesn’t seem like Google should emphasize the ChromeOS launcher as the starting point for their Bing AI rival. This is only speculation at this point, but it’s plausible that this indicates Google’s desire to quickly make Bard accessible across numerous platforms.
