Sony Developing a Sign Language Input System for PlayStation Consoles

Sony is leading the charge in inclusive gaming, and the tech giant’s recent patent is evidence of that. A recent patent registered by Sony Group Corporation, titled ‘Using Signing for Input to Search Fields,’ presents an aiding device paired with a display for people with hearing compilations to help them navigate through PlayStation consoles more efficiently by using sign language.

According to the patent, this system could allow seamless navigation and search through sign language gestures, making gaming content more accessible for players with speech disabilities. The patient’s description read as follows:

A display device such as a TV has an image capture device to image the gestures of a hearing-impaired user. The display device operates in a navigation mode, in which non-sign gestures can be made by the user to navigate a user interface, and a sign mode, in which sign language gestures may be made by the user to enter search terms to search for content.

The patent’s briefing also explains the thought behind this device/system and how this sign language input system would help overcome those shortcomings.

According to the summary, people with trouble hearing often have difficulty speaking in a way that voice recognition software, like Siri or Alexa, can understand. Even though people have tried to train the software to understand speech with obstacles, it doesn’t work well.

Using gestures to select letters and input search terms is slow and less convenient than speaking directly into the voice recognition software. So, this system will help people to solve these problems. It uses a camera to capture images of someone making sign language gestures and then identifies the letters or words being gestured. These letters or words are then searched for on a display device like a TV, and the results are shown on the screen.

The display device can switch between navigation mode, where non-sign language gestures are used to navigate through a user interface, and text input mode, where sign language gestures are used to input search terms.

This sign language input system will also include an apparatus and method to receive images of sign language gestures, identify the language elements (letters or words), input them as search information, and present the results on a display device.

This revolutionary device will be tailored to the deaf community and those with speech impediments, but it’s expected to benefit everyone.

Sony’s commitment to improving the lives of those with speech and hearing disabilities is evident in its past endeavors, including its recent Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids and Movement-based Navigation System. And now, this latest patented display device promises to revolutionize the gaming experience for non-verbal and low-verbal users, allowing for greater accessibility to PlayStation commands.

With this addition to its portfolio of inclusive technology, Sony is paving the way for a brighter future for the deaf community and those with speech disabilities.
