Recently, we saw how Microsoft is doing all it could to win the trust of regulators around the world, and CMA has always been a major player in the deal, as we have seen in the past couple of months.
Microsoft had offered Nintendo and other rival consoles to include Call of Duty for the next ten years, however like us, the CMA also had some reservations regarding ther statement, mostly because of Switch‘s technical capabilities.
Competition and Markets Authority, the UK‘s competition regulator, has raised concerns about the technical capabilities of the Nintendo Switch to run graphically intensive games like Call of Duty. In its provisional findings, the CMA notes that “large shooter games do not run as well on Nintendo’s consoles due to its technical differentiation.”
It adds that porting Call of Duty to the Switch may require compromises on graphical quality or the use of cloud-gaming solutions.
The report also discusses the differences between cloud gaming and gaming on consoles. While Resident Evil Village was able to launch on the Switch with gameplay and graphical fidelity comparable to high-level PCs, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, the CMA remains unconvinced about the viability of cloud gaming on the Switch.
The CMA’s concerns come at a time when Sony is also doubtful about the accessibility of Call of Duty on other consoles. The company is reportedly questioning how Microsoft would allow the game to be on other consoles, particularly with regards to cross-play and cross-progression features.
The report further reiterates that the Nintendo Switch does not offer the same level of graphically intensive games that PlayStation and Xbox compete on. This means that the platform may not be capable of offering certain graphically intensive multiplayer games like Call of Duty.
However, the report also acknowledges that challenges with porting a game to the Nintendo Switch have not impacted Nintendo’s ability to compete on the downstream console market. The platform has seen the release of games like Doom Eternal, Fortnite, and the Grand Theft Auto franchise. These titles, though, come with their own caveats, especially when it comes to graphical quality.
Whether or not Call of Duty will be available on the platform in the future remains to be seen, but the possibility of cloud streaming offers a potential workaround. Ultimately, it will be up to developers and publishers to determine whether or not the Nintendo Switch is a viable platform for future Call of Duty games.
At the time of writing, there is no response from Microsoft, but we will make sure to keep you updated as new information becomes available.
