YouTube to use AI to identify, restrict minor's accounts

Online age verification is getting serious with each passing day. YouTube is going to use AI to identify, and restrict underage accounts.

This isn't something that's happening out of the blue, Google had announced in February that it would introduce some technology to distinguish between adults and younger viewers. That's exactly what it is going to do.

But how will it work? YouTube says that its AI model will use machine learning to analyze accounts based on their activity, and also take the longevity of the account into consideration.

When YouTube identifies a user as an underage account, it will automatically disable personal advertising for their account, enable digital wellbeing tools like "take a break" and bedtime reminders, add safeguards to recommendations, display reminders about privacy when uploading videos or commenting, and also limit repetitive views of some content. Age-restricted videos will not be available for accounts that are identified as under 18.

If YouTube incorrectly identifies a user as under 18, the user can choose to verify their age by using a credit card, or Government ID, or a selfie. The Verge reports that YouTube's AI-powered age estimation model will roll out to some users in the U.S. starting August 13, 2025. You can find more details at the support page on Google's website.

On a similar note, Bloomberg reports that YouTube will be banned for children under 16 in Australia. Authorities have already imposed bans on social networks including TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat. Signal is also facing problems in Australia, as the government wants a backdoor in the encrypted app. Meredith Whittaker, Signal's President, has warned that the non-profit organization would pull the app from Australia, if the Country forces them to hand over user data to security intelligence agencies.

Xbox has begun rolling out age verification for users in the U.K. The European Union is working on an age verification prototype.
