Microsoft Lens PDF Scanner app for Android and iOS to be discontinued

Microsoft has announced that it is discontinuing the Microsoft Lens PDF Scanner app. The app, which was formerly called, Office Lens is a popular tool that is capable of converting images, i.e. photos into digital documents.

I'm going to refer to it as Microsoft Lens, so bear with me. Users can use it to convert photos of documents, or handwritten text, into PDF, Word, Powerpoint, Excel documents. The app also allowed users to save the documents to OneNote, OneDrive.

Bleeping Computer reports that Microsoft will begin phasing out the Microsoft Lens app in September, on both Android and iOS. The Redmond company will stop allowing new installations of the app in October. And in November, the app will be removed from the Google Play Store, and the iOS App Store. Microsoft says that users will not be able to use the app for new scans from December 2025.

A support article on Microsoft's website says that users can continue accessing existing data in the app, from the MyScans section. Microsoft is advising Lens users to switch to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. Insert shocked Pikachu face here.

Microsoft's article itself warns that the Microsoft 365 Copilot app lacks some features that were present in Lens, including the ability to Saving scans directly to OneNote, Word, or PowerPoint, scan business cards and saving them to OneNote, the Read out loud functionality, Immersive Reader integration. Killing a perfectly good free app in favor of one that focuses on AI, and it doesn't even have the old features.

As for alternatives, there is Adobe Scan, Google Drive can scan documents. OSS is free, open source and available for Android and iOS. I use Apple's Notes app on my iPhone to scan documents, tickets, receipts, it's excellent. Follow the official guide here if you need help with it.

Which document scanner app do you use?
