Microsoft previews Windows 365 Reserve, cloud-based emergency PCs

Microsoft has announced a limited public preview of its on-demand emergency cloud PC service, Windows 365 Reserve. It goes without saying that this isn't meant for personal users, like you and me.

This cloud-based platform is designed to minimize disruption in work caused by cyberattacks, system downtime, or other problems in the workplace. The service shouldn't be confused with Windows 365, which is a fully cloud-based PC.

Windows 365 Reserve, as the name suggests, is not designed for long-term usage. It grants users up to 10 days of Cloud PC access per year. That's basically 10 days of downtime. The cloud platform will allow ID admins to deploy the cloud PCs on-demand, with all Microsoft 365 apps, Microsoft Intune policies, and the organization's security posture by default. Admins can manage the cloud PCs within Microsoft Intune. They will receive notifications when a user's Cloud PC access is about to expire.

When deployed, end users will be able to access the cloud PC from any device, regardless of whether it is managed or unmanaged, even on personal devices, if their organization's policies allow it. End users can access Windows 365 Reserve via web browsers, or by using the Windows app. The cloud PC will offer a full desktop experience based on the organization's resources.

Microsoft says that Windows 365 Reserve is currently in gated public preview, enterprises will need to submit a form to participate in the program. Microsoft points out that even a single device failure can cause a chain-effect in an organization, that could cause disruptions in productivity, delaying deliverables, impact IT teams, and affect thousands of employees. That's a grim picture, but it is a possibility.

Last year's CrowdStrike outage showed us how things could stop working quickly, and it impacted millions of computers worldwide. Windows 365 Reserve offers an interesting approach, IT Teams can focus on fixing the problem impacting their environment, while employees continue to work as normal.
