Windows users who run into troubles when using the operating system may use integrated reset and recovery options to restore the system to a previous state. Microsoft had to admit this week that the most recent updates for several Windows versions broke the functionality.
The company confirmed the issue for Windows 11, version 23H2 and earlier, and for Windows 10, version 22H2. Only client versions of Windows are affected, according to Microsoft.
Windows administrators who tried to use Reset my PC, Fix problems using Windows Update, or Remote Wipe, might notice that the operation did not complete successfully.
The issue occurred on affected devices after installing the August 2025 security updates for the Windows operating system or the July 2025 preview updates.
Microsoft describes the fix in the following way:
[Fix for reset and recovery issue] This update addresses an issue introduced by the August 2025 security update (KB5063874), in which attempts to reset or recover the device might fail. This issue happens when users perform one or more of the following four processes: ???????
- System > Recovery > Reset my PC
- System Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update
- RemoteWipe CSP
Note that Microsoft lists only three of the four processes on the page.
Out-of-band patch resolves the issue
Microsoft released an out-of-band update for affected versions of Windows that promises to fix the issue.
Here are the links to the patches:
- Windows 11, version 23H2: KB5066189
- Windows 11, version 22H2: KB5066189
- Windows 10, version 22H2: KB5066188
Administrators may check Windows Update. It is offered as an optional update there, according to Microsoft. Another option is to download the update directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Here are the links that point to the direct downloads:
- Windows 11, version 23H2: download
- Windows 11, version 22H2: download
- Windows 10, version 22H2: download
It is highly recommended to install the update immediately to fix the issue. Users who postpone the installation of the latest updates should not be affected by the issue.
