WhatsApp users can now schedule calls, use reactions in groups

WhatsApp has added some new features to improve the group call experience. You can now schedule calls, and use in-call reactions.

WhatsApp is used by businesses, communities, teams, study groups, etc., so it's not surprising that the app is adding features that have existed on Zoom, Meet, and other video conferencing apps.

WhatsApp Schedule a Call

Call scheduling works exactly as it sounds like. To schedule a call on WhatsApp, go to the app's Calls tab and press the + button. Tap on Schedule Call. You can give your call a name, and also add a description to indicate what the topic of the call is about. Next, you have to select the time when the call will start, and when it will end. There is a toggle for "include end time", which you can turn off.

WhatsApp Call Scheduling

You may also choose the Call type, i.e. whether it will be a video call or a regular voice call. When you have set up your call schedule, tap on the next button at the top of the screen. This will let you choose which group or person you want to invite to the call. WhatsApp touts as a group call feature, but it is available for personal calls too.

WhatsApp Schedule Call Event Details

Your scheduled call will appear as a message with the call's name, scheduled time, call type. Recipients can click on the Join Call to respond to the invite. Tap on the calendar icon to view the event details, this has an option to add it to your phone's calendar app. It also has an option to copy a link to the scheduled call. This page also lists the people who will participate in the call. If you are the link creator, you will be notified when someone joins the call. WhatsApp says all calls are end-to-end encrypted.

Group calls on WhatsApp now have an option to "raise your hand", to indicate you would like to speak. On the other hand, you can tap on emojis to react to the call without interrupting the speaker.
