Firefox Adds AI Controls Menu to Disable or Manage AI Features

Mozilla has introduced a new AI Controls section in the latest desktop version of Firefox, allowing users to disable AI features entirely or manage them individually from the browser settings.

According to Mozilla, Firefox users can now access a dedicated AI Controls panel where they can block all current and future AI?enhanced features with a single toggle. The company frames this as a user?choice approach, in contrast to browsers that automatically enable AI features without granular controls.

The AI Controls section is available in the latest desktop release of Firefox.

What AI Features Users Can Now Disable

Mozilla notes that traditional machine learning systems, such as ranking or personalization features, have been part of browsers for years. The new AI Controls panel focuses specifically on newer AI?enhanced capabilities.

Features currently listed under AI Controls include:

  • Website translations
  • Image alt text generation in PDFs
  • AI?enhanced tab groups
  • Link previews
  • An AI chatbot in the sidebar

Each feature can be managed individually.

How to Block All AI Features Inside Firefox

Users who want to disable AI enhancements entirely can do so with a single switch.

To block all AI?enhanced features:

  1. Open the Menu bar.
  2. Select Firefox > Settings (or Preferences).
  3. Navigate to AI Controls.
  4. Turn on Block AI enhancements.

Mozilla states that enabling this option blocks both current and future AI?enhanced features.

How to Manage Individual AI Features

Firefox also allows users to enable or block specific AI features without affecting others.

To manage individual features:

  1. Open the Menu bar.
  2. Go to Firefox > Settings (or Preferences).
  3. Select AI Controls.
  4. Locate the desired AI feature.
  5. Use the dropdown menu to choose Available, Enabled, or Blocked.

According to Mozilla:

  • Available means the feature is visible and can be used.
  • Enabled means the user has opted in.
  • Blocked hides the feature and prevents its use.

Users can change these settings at any time.

Why Mozilla Introduced AI Controls

Mozilla says the goal is to give users greater transparency and control as AI-powered tools become more common in web browsers, and many users get frustrated by it.

By centralizing these settings in one place, the company wants to ensure AI features remain optional and user-driven rather than automatically enabled by default.

The AI Control Feature is Already Available

The AI Controls section is available in the latest desktop version of Firefox starting from the 24th of February. Mozilla has not indicated whether the same controls will be introduced to mobile versions.

The company directs users to its Mozilla Support page for additional details and configuration guidance.
