Google is updating Wear OS so earthquake alerts can work even when a smartwatch isn’t paired with or connected to a phone, according to details in the Google Play Services v26.07 update.
Previously, earthquake alerts would only appear on a Wear OS watch if it was actively paired and connected to a smartphone. With the new Play Services release, Google says Wear OS devices can now receive earthquake alerts independently of a connected phone.
The update note directly from the report states: “With this feature, you can now get earthquake alerts on your Wear devices even if it’s unpaired from the phone.”
Earthquake Alerts Become More Independent on Android's Wear OS
Google brought its Earthquake Alerts system to Wear OS in July 2025. The feature mirrors Android’s phone-based alerts by notifying users seconds before shaking is expected.
With the latest change, a Wear OS watch no longer has to rely on a connected smartphone to show alerts. That should improve safety for people who leave their phones during activities such as running or working out.
Google has not clarified whether the feature requires a cellular-enabled smartwatch. Bluetooth-only models may still need a connected phone for data, but the update notes don’t spell this out.
There's also no clear information provided on whether users will have to enable the feature manually on their watch or if it will switch on automatically after updating to Google Play Services v26.07.
How Google’s Earthquake Alerts Work
On Android phones, Google’s earthquake detection system uses built-in sensors, including accelerometers, to detect tremors. Devices send anonymized data to Google’s servers. When multiple phones in the same area register seismic activity, Google estimates the earthquake’s magnitude and epicenter and then pushes alerts to users in affected regions.
There are two main alert types:
- “Be Aware” alerts for lighter shaking.
- “Take Action” alerts for stronger events.
Take Action alerts override Do Not Disturb, volume, and notification settings, display a red warning screen, and play a loud alarm along with safety guidance. The Wear OS implementation is expected to follow similar logic.
Rollout Status of Wear OS Earthquake Alerts
Google Play Services v26.07 began rolling out on February 23, 2026. As with most Play Services updates, the update is staged and may take some time to reach all qualified devices.
Details on device compatibility, carrier requirements, and any limitations have not been provided in the announcement.
