OpenAI Will Test Visual Ads in ChatGPT During Image Generation in the US Later This Month

OpenAI is introducing a visual ad format in ChatGPT and will test it first while users generate images, the company announced on October 5, 2026. Testing begins later in October in the United States with an initial group of advertisers.

OpenAI says the new ads use pictures to show product inspiration, how a product is used, or the experiences a service offers. The ads will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the image ChatGPT is creating. The company also repeats its position that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people each week, according to OpenAI, which describes advertising as a way to serve a much larger market than subscriptions alone.

How Visual Ads Will Appear During ChatGPT Image Generation

Image generation is the only surface named for the test. Example screenshots published by OpenAI show ChatGPT on mobile displaying a grocery brand's product images with a "Learn more" button while an image request is processed.

OpenAI says its placement guardrails assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising and are meant to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts.

Automated review, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring are used to find policy violations. Qualifying advertisers can also use a new Negative Phrases option to exclude placements that conflict with their own brand policies.

The announcement does not say which ChatGPT plans will see the visual ads during the US test. Users who generate images in ChatGPT should watch for the ad label, which OpenAI says separates sponsored content from the generated image.

New Measurement Tools and Partners for ChatGPT Ads

The other half of the update targets advertisers. OpenAI is adding integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp so businesses can send conversion data from their existing systems to ChatGPT Ads.

Supported attribution partners now include AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Kochava, Singular, Northbeam, Triple Whale, DV Rockerbox, Airbridge, and Tenjin.

Incrementality testing is at an early stage. OpenAI is working with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on geo-based experiments that measure the causal impact of ChatGPT Ads.

Early partner figures shared by the company include a 15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition for WeightWatchers compared with its blended paid search benchmark.

DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are running brand suitability pilots in a controlled testing environment. OpenAI says the two companies will evaluate how its safeguards work without accessing private user conversations.

OpenAI has not said when the visual format will expand beyond image generation or reach markets outside the United States. The company says it will keep adding ad formats and capabilities, and businesses of all sizes can already sign up for ChatGPT Ads through its advertising portal.
