Psychological Horror Game The Medium Joins List of FSR-Supported Titles

Developer Bloober Team has just announced that their psychological horror title The Medium will now be supporting AMD Radeon’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology as announced in a recent tweet.

With this announcement, The Medium now officially supports both Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR technologies so it’s very interesting to see how much gains are actually seen in a head-to-head comparison. For FSR, no numbers regarding performance increase have been unveiled yet by either the developers or AMD.

Released in June 22 of this year, AMD Radeon’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is supposed to be the company’s answer to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology. As games get more and more visually sophisticated, it can only be expected that hardware, even those at the top of the pecking order would face struggles, mainly with inconsistent frame rates. FSR hopes to address that by using “cutting-edge upscaling technologies to help boost your framerates and deliver high-quality, high-resolution gaming experiences”.

To put it simply, the way it works is FSR lowers the render resolution of a specific scene in a game so that the graphics card can easily pump out more frames and make the gameplay feel smoother. To compensate for the lower resolution, AMD uses its “cutting-edge” algorithm to upscale the lower resolution back to your preferred setting, resulting in a “near-native resolution image quality”. This process then analyzes the edges in a specific scene, sharpens it, resulting in what according to AMD is “indistinguishable” image quality.

Announced in Computex, FSR now services the following titles:

  • 22 Racing Series
  • Anno 1800
  • Evil Genius 2
  • Godfall
  • KingShunt
  • Terminator Resistance
  • The Riftbraker
  • Necromunda: Hired Gun
  • Resident Evil Villiage
  • Edge of Eternity
  • Arcadegeddon

More developers and upcoming titles have also been announced to adopt AMD’s image upsampling technology such as Capcom, Electronic Arts, Gearbox, Obsidian Entertainment, and Ubisoft. Far Cry 6 and Baldur’s Gate 3 which is still in early access period is also expected to have FSR on their respective day one launches.

One more important feature of FSR is its availability across a huge array of GPU generations, including Nvidia’s. Here is an official list from AMD of cards that support FSR:

  • AMD Radeon 6000 Series
  • AMD Radeon 6000M Series
  • AMD Radeon 5000 Series
  • AMD Radeon 5000M Series
  • AMD Radeon VII
  • AMD Radeon RX Vega Series
  • AMD Radeon 600 Series
  • AMD Radeon RX 500 Series
  • AMD Radeon RX 480, 470 and 460
  • AMD Ryzen desktop CPUs with AMD Radeon graphics
  • AMD Ryzen mobile CPUs with Radeon Graphics
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 Series
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 Series
  • Nvidia GeForce 16 Series
  • Nvidia GeForce 10 Series
