Konami Has Delisted Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 on Several Platforms Due to Licensing Issues

Metal Gear fans can’t seem to catch a break. It’s been more than a few years since Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and while Konami has not exactly slacked with the license with Metal Gear Survive, that last title was very widely negatively received. Not only was it a generic, unfun, and extremely boring zombie shooter that goes against the core Metal Gear games, it was also created without the series’ beloved creator, Hideo Kojima.

Now, it would appear that several Metal Gear games have also been delisted on several platforms, and as of now you won’t be able to purchase Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 plus its several iterations. Check out the full post from Konami below:

*** [Important Notification] Temporary removal of METAL GEAR SOLID 2 and METAL GEAR SOLID 3 from digital storefronts (PlayStation®3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, etc.)

Thank you for playing the METAL GEAR series.

We are currently working on renewing the licenses for select historical archive footage used in-game, therefore, we have made the temporary decision to begin suspending the sale of METAL GEAR SOLID 2, METAL GEAR SOLID 3 and all products that include these games from digital storefronts globally starting from November 8th, 2021.

We sincerely ask for your patience and understanding as we work towards making these products available for purchase once again.

Thank you for your continued support of the METAL GEAR series.

Which products will be temporarily removed?

・PlayStation®3 METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SONS OF LIBERTY HD EDITION

・PlayStation®3 METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER HD EDITION

・PlayStation®3 METAL GEAR SOLID HD EDITION

・PlayStation®Vita METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SONS OF LIBERTY HD EDITION

・PlayStation®Vita METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER HD EDITION

・PlayStation®Vita METAL GEAR SOLID HD COLLECTION

・PlayStation™Now METAL GEAR SOLID HD COLLECTION

・Xbox 360 METAL GEAR SOLID HD EDITION: 2 & 3

・Nintendo 3DS METAL GEAR SOLID SNAKE EATER 3D

・GOG.com METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SUBSTANCE

・NVIDIA® SHIELD™ METAL GEAR SOLID 2 HD for SHIELD TV

・NVIDIA® SHIELD™ METAL GEAR SOLID 3 HD for SHIELD TV

*Some of the above titles are not available in some countries and regions

As noted in the post, the affected platforms include PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Nvidia Shield TV, Nintendo 3DS and PC via GOG.com. The reason for the pull appears to be licensing issues for historical footage used in those games. The series’ biggest fans will know that footage mentioned, as both games’ expositions in several parts are actually backed up by real-life footage from actual historical events, as the game does blend in these actual events as backdrops for both Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.

Remasters incoming?

While it may be tempting to think that Konami removed these games as a precursor for possible remasters, it’s important to note that the publisher has stated that these games will be returning to digital storefronts in the future. For the meantime, gamers on these particular platforms, especially PC, will have to do without these games until Konami returns them online.
