Very few games manage to come back from the dead, and even fewer go on to dominate and redefine the tactical multiplayer shooter genre. Yes, that would be Rainbow Six Siege. Building on its success, Ubisoft is finally bringing the R6S experience to mobile.
Finally, we wanted to say a word to the Siege fans out there: our goal is not to have you stop playing on PC or console and switch to mobile. We know there is nothing like the adrenaline rush of a close Siege match on the big screen or the precision of a mouse and keyboard. Since we can’t carry our monitors with us everywhere, Rainbow Six Mobile will give you the opportunity to play the game you love in short, accessible bursts, while also enabling millions of new players to get the R6 experience.
Rainbow Six Siege is going to join the ranks of Fortnite, Call of Duty, and other big IPs getting mobile ports. Given the success enjoyed by some these titles outside the console and PC realm, it is only logical more titles will branch out to the mobile market.
Although, unlike the various battle royale games, porting R6S can prove to be a much bigger challenge due to game’s unique mechanics. Most of the ports like Call of Duty Mobile, and PUBGM manage to keep the core gameplay intact, but several mechanics and game physics are toned down to meet phone hardware requirements.
Judging solely based on the game’s announcement trailer, it seems Rainbow Six Mobile retains the excitement of the original game to a large extent. The trailer showcases the map — bank, which seems to retain most of the details from the original game. Several operators are also showcased in the trailer with their abilities, like Sledge and Hibana. While the game won’t feature all the operators from the original on launch, players can expect to see most, if not all the Year 1 operators.
The Rainbow Six Mobile announcement blog reiterates a similar tone from the developers, aiming to deliver a game that is very similar to the Rainbow Six Siege fans know and love. But since the game is being built from the ground-up for mobile, some gameplay mechanics might be missing or changed to suit the medium. Players can expect the classic 5v5 – defenders vs attackers gameplay, but “now with an entirely new gameplay control system developed specifically for mobile and extensive optimization of the UI and in-game visual presentation.”
Veteran Rainbow Six Siege players will know how much the game relies on quick peeking around corners, precision aiming and using the environmental destruction in maps. These elements form the core of R6S, but are also the most difficult parts to emulate on mobile. It will be interesting to see how much of this translates into the final Rainbow Six mobile release.
Moreover, unlike some of the game ports in which development is outsourced to other studios. Rainbow Six Mobile is being developed by a new independent dev team based in Montreal, also home to Ubisoft Montreal, the original creators of Rainbow Six Siege. The blog also points out, Rainbow Six Mobile will not be affecting work on R6S in any way, since both games are being led by completely different teams.
With regards to a release date, nothing has been confirmed yet. Although the game is in development for three years now, and according to the devs, test runs with real players will commence soon.
