How to Delete your Snapchat Account?

A user, out of privacy concerns, personal issues or to take a break from the service may decide to deactivate or delete his Snap account. As the Snapchat service does not support the temporary deactivation of a user account, then the user is left with no option but to delete the Snap account. Some folks may think that uninstalling the Snapchat app may be a good idea but there are two caveats. First, a user can still be contacted by friends and his chats are visible to them. Second, a user’s data may remain on the Snapchat servers.

How to Delete Snap Account

Deletion Phases of a Snapchat Account

The Snap account deletion process is divided into two phases:

  • 30 Day Temporary Deactivation
  • Permanent Deletion of an Account After Passing of 30 days

In the first phase, the account is put on hold and the user’s friends will not be able to contact him. The user’s chats may also not be visible to other users. In this phase, a user can reactivate his Snap account, if he changes his mind. In the second phase, once the 30 days are elapsed, the account is deleted and the following data will be deleted from the Snapchat servers:

  • Account
  • Account settings
  • Friends
  • Snaps
  • Chats
  • Story
  • Device data
  • Location data

But keep in mind that certain personal information may be retained on the Snapchat database for “legal, security and business needs”. The retained data can be a user’s in-app purchases, the date a user accepted Snapchat’s TOS and its privacy policy, etc. This also may include:

  • Personal information that was shared with Snapchat when installing the app or creating the account.
  • Information linked to a user’s device, location, and data logs.
  • Third-party information, like contact lists, data collected from advertisers, or any other third-party linked information.
