Google stated on Friday that it had fired a senior software developer who had claimed the business had created a “sentient” artificial intelligence bot.
After stating that the AI chatbot known as LaMDA claims to have a soul and expresses human thoughts and feelings, Blake Lemoine, who worked for Google’s Responsible AI team, was put on administrative leave last month. Google dismissed his claims as “wholly false.”

This claim of Lemoine has gotten the response of various AI scientists and ethicists that his statement was essentially impractical given current technology. Lemoine argues that after speaking with the chatbot created by LaMDA, he has come to believe that it is more than simply a program and that it has its thoughts and feelings, as opposed to just providing discourse that is plausible enough to give the impression that it does as intended.

As we share in our AI Principles, we take the development of AI very seriously and remain committed to responsible innovation. Linda has been through 11 distinct reviews, and we published a research paper earlier this year detailing the work that goes into its responsible development. If an employee shares concerns about our work, as Blake did, we review them extensively. We found Blake’s claims that LaMDA is sentient to be wholly unfounded and worked to clarify that with him for many months. These discussions were part of the open culture that helps us innovate responsibly. So, it’s regrettable that despite lengthy engagement on this topic, Blake still chose to persistently violate clear employment and data security policies that include the need to safeguard product information. We will continue our careful development of language models, and we wish Blake well.
