Apple Wins “Batterygate” Lawsuit Against South Korean iPhone Owners

Thousands of Korean iPhone owners lost a lawsuit against Apple on Thursday. They said that the company purposely slowed down the performance of older models to force people to buy new ones. Without providing any explicit justification for its decision, the Seoul Central District Court issued a ruling that went against 9,851 owners of previous iPhone models. To add insult to injury, the court also ordered the plaintiffs to cover the defendants’ legal fees.

In case you missed it, Apple was involved in an extended scandal in 2017 called “batterygate,” in which it was claimed that the company slowed down some iPhone models on purpose to extend their battery life. Batterygate refers to the backlash over Apple’s decision to implement software updates that reduce the performance of Apple products in order to extend their battery life.

The iPhone owners in South Korea who brought the lawsuit against Apple for slowing down their devices to increase battery life ultimately lost their case. The court found no evidence to support their claims and ruled in favor of Apple.
