Gran Turismo 8 Confirms to be In Development at Polyphony Digital

Gran Turismo, the popular racing video game franchise developed by Polyphony Digital, has been a staple in the gaming industry for over two decades. With the release of the latest iteration, Gran Turismo 7, for the PlayStation 5 in 2022, fans eagerly anticipate the next installment in the series.

And it looks like Gran Turismo 8 is already in development at Polyphony Digital, most likely the first entirely next-gen Gran Turismo game that will be released only on PlayStation 5, unlike GT 7. The creator of the Gran Turismo franchise, Kazunori Yamauchi, revealed in a recent interview with a Japanese media outlet, Game Watch, that the studio has already decided on the theme of the next game and they are working on it, but he didn’t reveal any specifics.

We are starting to work on the next one, but I can’t talk about it yet. It’s a shame that I can’t talk about it very much.”

Nevertheless, it is a positive sign and exciting news for GT fans. Still, you should not expect any official reveal or confirmation anytime soon. Even if we look at the previous track record and release cycle of Gran Turismo games, it would be safe to say that Gran Turismo 8 is at least a year or two away.

However, there are a couple of things lined up for the GT fans in the near future that they can cheer on before the next big mainline game, the first one being the free update of Gran Turismo 7 on PSVR 2 that is coming out on 22nd February 2023. Gran Turismo 7 on PSVR 2 paired with PlayStation 5 will give the complete GT 7 experience in VR with all the modes, cars, environments, and tracks included that are available to play in the standard game.

The VR version will even support the co-op multiplayer features that will allow you to enjoy the game with other players, but unfortunately, the split-screen local multiplayer will not be supported by Gran Turismo 7 VR. Other than that, Sony has also confirmed that the filming of the Gran Turismo movie has started, and we might get a glimpse of what Sony is bringing to the big screens soon.
