Nothing CEO Believes OnePlus Phones No Longer Have a “Real Identity”

When it comes to the tech industry, competition is fierce and cutthroat. Companies are constantly vying for market share and trying to one-up each other with the latest and greatest products. It’s not uncommon for executives to take subtle hits at their competitors in the media or try to undermine their products (no, it’s not Samsung we’re talking about).

Nothing CEO Carl Pei recently reviewed the OnePlus 11 and gave his straightforward and honest opinions on the smartphone. It’s not the first time he’s done something like this, as his review of the iPhone 14 Pro, has gone viral and amassed over 3.2 million views as of this writing.

As a former executive at OnePlus, one might expect Pei to be biased in favor of the company or to downplay any flaws in the product. However, Pei displayed a rare level of integrity and professionalism by providing an unbiased review of the OnePlus 11. He mentioned its advantages as well as highlighted some of the flaws. You can see his full review here:

In his review, Pei praised the OnePlus 11 for its sleek design and solid build quality. He loved the device’s weight and its rounded edges [unlike the Nothing Phone (1)]. However, he did note that the phone’s buttons were too thin for his liking, and that the power button and alert slider were not properly aligned.

Moreover, he mentioned how the cameras on the OnePlus 11 were fairly good, comparing it to Nothing Phone (1). He claims that in well-lit areas, the OnePlus 11 outperforms the Nothing Phone (1) due to brighter colors and greater detail. However, in low light, the phone struggles to maintain sharpness, making the photos appear soft in comparison.

In addition, he discussed how the software isn’t what it used to be, highlighting some of the major flaws he encountered that were frustrating to him. Carl stated that the software requires a little more polishing. However, Pei still recommended the OnePlus 11 to some users who wanted good performance or were straight up hardcore gamers despite the fact that he was the CEO of a competing phone brand.

Pei Believes OnePlus Doesn’t Have a “Real Identity”

One notable point of criticism made by Pei was that OnePlus devices do not have a “real” identity, with each new generation featuring a different design. In my personal opinion, I find this critique somewhat harsh, as the most recent OnePlus 11 appears to carry on the design language of its predecessor, the OnePlus 10 Pro.

Additionally, the recent launch of Samsung’s S23 series was met with criticism for being too similar to the previous generation. So, it appears that there will always be a faction that is not satisfied, creating a tradeoff in design choices.

For those who don’t already know, Pei, co-founded OnePlus in 2013, but left the company in 2020 to start his own venture, Nothing. The next phone from the company, the Nothing Phone (2) will be out this year, so check out our coverage on that if you want to learn more.

Conclusion

As the CEO of Nothing, a company that is still in its early stages, Pei’s review of the OnePlus 11 also demonstrates his commitment to providing customers with high-quality, and reliable products. By providing an honest assessment of a competing product, Pei has shown that he is not afraid to acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of other companies in the industry, and that he is committed to delivering the best possible products to his own customers.

In a world where hype and marketing often overshadow quality and performance, Carl Pei’s review of the OnePlus 11 is a refreshing reminder that honesty and integrity are still valued and appreciated by consumers.

As for the upcoming Nothing Phone (2), stay tuned as we will make sure to keep you informed of any developments as new information becomes available.
