Steam Big Picture Mode’s Latest Update Takes Inspiration from Steam Deck UI

After a lot of waiting, we finally get to see what Steam has been working on for the past 18 months. The Big Picture Mode on Steam recently got a huge update, where most of the issues were addressed and major changes were made.

The updated Steam Big Picture mode takes inspiration from the clean user interface of the Steam Deck handheld gaming console. With the new update, users can take advantage of a revamped home screen, a universal search for faster access to games, a movable standalone and overlay keyboard, enhanced support for the Xbox controller, a keyboard overlay for quickly locating Steam guides and achievements, and much more. You can learn more about the update here.

Released in 2012 on Steam initially, Big Picture mode has since seen several updates. The functionality was developed by Valve to satisfy the needs of its loyal player base who prefer to play its games with traditional TV and game controller setups. While it has been out for a while, only a small number of bug patches have been done prior to this week’s major update.

Changes to Big Picture Mode that are exclusive to Windows can be found in the most recent Steam Client Update, including the ability to swap the primary display and launch in windowed mode. Valve also states that they fixed an issue where the Big Picture Mode overlay was the wrong size when Windows was set to a scaling factor of anything other than 100% and that they enhanced UI scaling at higher resolutions.

It makes sense that Steam would include part of the Steam Deck’s functionality in the Steam desktop client, given that the Steam Deck is among the finest examples of gaming hardware available in 2022. While this is all that we know about the update, rest assured, we will keep you updated, as new information becomes available.
