Upcoming Chrome Update To Support NVIDIA’s Super Resolution

Chrome now supports Nvidia’s RTX Video Super Resolution, thanks to an “Early Stable Update for Desktop” from Google. Using the same artificial intelligence (AI) that has made Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) such a success in the gaming sphere, NVIDIA’s latest GeForce driver will bring this video stream upscaling functionality to the masses on PC.

The latest stable release of Chrome (110.0.5481.77) is currently available to a small group of users and will be made available to the public on 7th February 2023 (tomorrow). This, however, is still conditional on NVIDIA delivering new driver updates alongside the release. The manual activation of RTX VSR via the NVIDIA Control Panel is now required for it to function. It won’t be activated by default.

The feature is presently only supported by the 30 and 40-series RTX Cards, although a compatible upgrade for the 20-series RTX Cards is on the way as shared by the “Product Line Manager” for NVIDIA.

At CES 2023, Nvidia unveiled its RTX Video Super Resolution technology. In a nutshell, it accepts input footage between 360p and 1440p and then utilizes deep learning and neural networks to upscale it to 4K quality. Naturally, the icing on the cake that Nvidia’s AI provides is a superior upscaling quality compared to what your hardware and software combination could produce before.

NVIDIA demonstrated the technology’s effectiveness on YouTube, but its potential is likely much greater. Nothing prevents NVIDIA and Google from integrating VSR with GeForce Now or other high-end video streaming services like Netflix, at least from a technical standpoint. That might, in theory, open the door to higher-tier membership plans that support 4K video output from 1080p sources.

Despite claims made by the major graphics chip vendor companies, whose upscaling capabilities weren’t as good as they are now, the final product is in the viewing when it comes to upscaling technology. We’re looking forward to being able to test NVIDIA RTX Video Super-Resolution with the wide variety of streaming video content shortly to be available.
