11 Methods to Fix FPS Drops and Lag in Destiny 2: Lightfall

Ever since Destiny 2: Lightfall got released, many players have been complaining about lag and FPS drops in the game. This of course puts you at a disadvantage against your rivals, and you become an easy target.

The FPS drops are usually due to incorrect game settings. First, you need to have a compatible PC that at least meets the minimum requirements to run the game. Secondly, the settings in the game need to be changed as we instruct in this article.

In case changing the settings doesn’t negate the lag and fluctuations, the problem will be with your device drivers. So, simply updating the graphic drivers will solve the issue.

Below, there will be a total of 11 methods through which you can fix the frame rates of Destiny 2: Lightfall. Go through them one after another and see which one works on your end.

1. Change Game Settings

Before trying any other way, start off by changing your in-game settings. Sometimes the graphics and FPS rates are set very high, which your driver doesn’t support, and thus the game lags. So, you’ll find a list below of our recommended video settings. Make sure to adjust yours in accordance.

2. Update Device Drivers

For high-graphic games, the graphic drivers need to be up-to-date as well. If you’re using an old driver that doesn’t support Destiny 2, then we highly recommend changing it. However, if the driver can be updated, then it’s better to update it first and check if the frame rates get stable.

Here’s how to update your device drivers:

  1. Start Run with Win + R and paste the following to open the device manager: devmgmt.msc
  2. Expand the Display Adapters option.
  3. Now right-click on your graphics driver and then click on Update driver.

Follow the steps below for the process:

  1. Open run with Win + R and paste: %appdata%
  2. Click OK.

4. Close Background Apps

The reason for the ping spike in the game can be due to unnecessary applications running in the background. Some of them would be taking a lot of system resources, and thus the game won’t be getting the RAM that it requires to operate with stability.

So, it’s obvious that you should play Destiny 2 with no other process running in the background. If they are running, follow the steps below to stop them.

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. You’ll be at the processes tab by default.
  3. Stop every process that is running by right-clicking on it and then selecting End Task.

In-game overlays are undoubtedly important, especially for messages, but they do eat up some RAM as well. And this can also be the reason for the lag in the game.

Mostly, you’ll be using Discord’s overlay, Steam’s, or the Windows Game Bar. Turn their overlay option off by following these simple steps.

Windows Game Bar

  1. Go to Settings > Gaming.
  2. Turn off the Xbox Game Bar option on the right side.

  1. Go to your Game Library on Steam and right-click on Destiny 2: Lightfall.

SSDs are much faster than HDDs. In case your HDD is struggling to run the game, get an SSD and reinstall the game there. If you’re able to install the SSD yourself, then well and good; otherwise, get it done from a computer store. Afterward, install the game and select the location of your SSD for the Steam downloads.

The install size of Destiny 2 is 102.60 GB on Steam, and the pre-load storage space requirement is 223.3 GB.
