How to fix gray screen issue in Google Chrome

Google released the Chrome 139 update yesterday, with various changes. But it also seems to have introduced an odd problem.

Some users may find that Chrome does not render properly when opened, it may result in a blank gray screen (or a white or black screen), without any UI or text. A couple of dozen people have reported the issue, which suggests this could be a common problem.

The issue seems to be affecting Chrome 139.0.7258.66 and 139.0.7258.67, which as I mentioned were released yesterday. I tested this version on a Windows 10 machine, it seemed fine.

As for the fix, you don't have to uninstall Chrome and reinstall it. We just have to make a couple of changes, which are listed below (thanks to u/rynithlon)

How to fix Google Chrome gray screen issue

1. Right-click on the Chrome desktop shortcut.

2. Add the following command to the end of the target field. --disable-gpu.

It should look like this: "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-gpu

3. Open Chrome, and you should be able to use it.

4. Go to chrome://flags/#use-angle

5. Set the value to Default.

6. You can remove the --disable-gpu option from the desktop shortcut now.

Note: This fix is only for Windows users. The Disable GPU command is used to turn off hardware acceleration.

It looks like the Chrome update may have broken OpenGL compatibility, and that was causing the rendering issue. If you hadn't changed the value earlier, you may not be affected by the issue.

A bug report has been filed on the Chromium Issue Tracker. It seems the problem surfaced at the end of last month, on July 31st to be precise. That coincides with the day when an early Chrome 139 update was released, and it was also 139.0.7258.66. So, it remained unpatched for a whole week, before the new version began rolling out to more users.

Did you face the issue on your computer?
