August Pixel Update fixes broken back button, and brings critical security fixes

Google has released the August Pixel update for eligible devices. The update fixes a bug that was causing the back button to be unresponsive, and also ships with some important security fixes.

The problem seems to have started after the Android 16 update began rolling out in June. Several Pixel phone users had previously reported that it broke the three-button navigation on their devices. According to reports, the back button would do nothing when a user tapped on it, users had to tap or use the gesture several times to get it to work. Similarly, the back gesture would also fail to register, and sometimes it would take over 30 seconds to work. Naturally, this problem has frustrated users. The issue seems to have affected several Pixel phones including the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL. One user claims they were able to fix the problem by deleting the Play Services and Play Store cache/storage, and updating them.

Google's latest Pixel update seems to have fixed the problem. The Verge mentions that Google's patch notes vaguely describes the problem, which happens under "certain conditions". While that sounds like good news, some users say that the update has not fixed the issue on their phone completely, and that the back button is not working in some apps.

The August Pixel update also brings some security fixes. One of these patches is related to a remote code execution vulnerability that was tracked under CVE-2025-48530. It did not require additional execution privileges or user interaction. The issue has a critical security rating.

While that issue is specific to Pixel devices, a second critical rated security issue has also been patched in the latest update. The issue, tracked under CVE-2025-21479, affects Qualcomm closed-source components, specifically it exploited unauthorized command execution in GPU micronode, which could lead to memory corruption. The security flaw is listed as a known, exploited issue. Another issue, which was also exploited, was tracked as CVE-2025-27038. It is described as a "use after free in graphics" exploit that could cause memory corruption while rendering graphics using Adreno GPU drivers in Chrome.
