YouTube is set to roll out its likeness detection feature to all eligible creators aged 18 and over in the coming weeks. Previously, the tool was only available to creators in the YouTube Partner Program and high-profile users. Its purpose is to identify videos that contain AI-generated or altered footage of a creator's face and to offer a way to request their removal.
The update was announced on the YouTube community by Google, which described likeness detection as a first of its kind in YouTube Studio. It’s designed to help creators see and manage how AI is used to depict them on the platform.
What YouTube’s Likeness Detection Tool Actually Does
After a creator enrolls, YouTube's systems work to identify videos on the platform that may include altered or synthetic uses of the creator's facial likeness. Creators can then see where their likeness appears in AI-generated or modified videos and request the removal of unauthorized content that violates YouTube's privacy guidelines directly through YouTube Studio. This helps reduce the chance of viewers being misled by videos that seem to feature them.
The system uses facial scans and government-issued ID verification to confirm the creator's identity before enabling detection.
How Creators Can Enroll in Likeness Detection
The feature will be gradually rolled out to creators aged 18 and over. Once available, enrollment can be completed through YouTube Studio on a desktop: Open the left menu, select content detection, likeness, and click start now.
Grant YouTube permission to use likeness detection technology. Then, complete a one-time verification process that takes a few minutes.
After setup, creators may not see any flagged videos immediately. YouTube explains that the feature works in the background, and a lack of detected videos simply means no unauthorized AI uses of the creator's likeness have been found so far.
Likeness detection addresses concerns over AI-generated deepfake content. The tool provides creators with a way to monitor and respond to misuse of their image, rather than relying only on YouTube's content moderation or takedown requests.
Google has stated that the tool will continue to improve during the rollout. The company has not yet announced a date for full availability or expansion beyond the United States.
