OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Library To Store Uploaded Files In One Place

OpenAI is introducing a new “Library” feature in ChatGPT that automatically saves user-uploaded files in a dedicated section of the interface, according to company documentation.

This feature is available to Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers and is being rolled out globally, except in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The Library is visible in the ChatGPT sidebar and contains files that users have previously uploaded during chats.

How ChatGPT Library Saves Files Automatically

OpenAI states that ChatGPT now automatically saves uploaded and generated files, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images, in a secure storage location linked to the user’s account.

These files can then be accessed later without the need to find the original conversation. During testing, files uploaded in recent chats may already appear in the Library. This behavior is expected, as the system stores files by default once they are uploaded.

Why ChatGPT Library Is Separate From Chat History

Deleting a conversation does not delete files stored in the Library. Files stay available until the user manually removes them. To delete a file, open the Library tab in ChatGPT, select the file, and click Delete or the trash icon

OpenAI states that deleted files are removed from its servers within 30 days.

How To Reuse Files From ChatGPT Library

Users can attach files they've already stored to new conversations without needing to re-upload them. To add a file, open the composer menu by clicking the attachment button, select “Add from library,” and then choose a file

This feature helps users reuse documents more easily across multiple chats.

Where ChatGPT Library Is Available And Its Limits

The Library feature is available only to paid ChatGPT plans, including Plus, Pro, and Business subscriptions. It is not yet accessible in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. OpenAI has not announced a timeline for when it will be available in those regions.
