Studios in the games industry have scheduled their release dates around the November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, according to Asobo Studio producer Eric Chort.
This has resulted in a notably busy fall release calendar, with most major publishers fitting their launches into the six-week period leading up to GTA 6.
Chort shared these insights with Eurogamer while discussing the launch plans for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, an upcoming prequel set to be released on August 27.
Studios Adapt to “The Ogre” of GTA 6
All the studios around the world were thinking about it. When you know that GTA is coming, you realize that in terms of marketing, player engagement, and the overall gaming experience, GTA is like the main event, the biggest one. So, teams try to adapt and find ways to avoid being overshadowed.
Asobo chose to release Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy in late August. This period would normally be considered a relatively quiet and safe window for launches, but Chort acknowledged that the 2026 calendar is already quite crowded, even before GTA 6 is released.
"This year, we see that there are many good games, or at least a lot of quality titles, so we recognize that this is just how the industry is. We aim to create the best game we can," he added.
A Crowded Pre-GTA 6 Release Calendar
GTA 6's release in November has led to most major fall titles being shifted earlier in the year to avoid direct competition. Confirmed releases in the weeks leading up to GTA 6 include
- Marvel's Wolverine,
- Gears of War: E-Day,
- Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave,
- Control Resonant (September 24),
- Silent Hill Townfall,
- The Blood of Dawnwalker (September 3),
- Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy (August 27), and
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (October 23), with early access available from October 16.
Publishers have effectively turned September and October into the most active period for new game releases this year.
Why GTA 6 Distorts the Entire Release Schedule
Take-Two Interactive projects that its fiscal year 2027 revenue will surpass $8 billion, with most of the growth expected to come from GTA 6. Industry estimates indicate the game could sell up to 45 million copies on PS5 in its first week. Rockstar's GTA 5 remains a strong seller, continuing to move millions of copies annually more than a decade after its initial release, providing steady ongoing revenue.
The anticipated commercial impact of GTA 6, along with the concentration of player time and attention on a single release, makes it advantageous for publishers to avoid launching competing titles in the same window. Releasing games too close to GTA 6 risks reduced coverage and player engagement, regardless of the quality.
GTA 6 is scheduled for a console launch on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not yet been confirmed.
