Capcom has rescheduled the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword to September 4, 2026, moving it three weeks earlier than the initially planned September 25 launch.
The announcement was made on X and applies to all platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Windows, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 digital version will be canceled and need to be placed again with the new release date.
This game is a continuation of Capcom's Onimusha series, which had been inactive for several years before this revival was announced.
Pre-Order Editions And Switch 2 Cancellations
Onimusha: Way of the Sword can be pre-ordered from digital storefronts in three editions:
- The Standard Edition includes the base game only.
- The Deluxe Edition features the base game along with a Deluxe Kit that contains an alternative cosmetic outfit and gauntlet for Musashi, several charms, and cosmetic sword skins.
- The Premium Deluxe Edition includes everything in the Deluxe Edition plus a Premium Kit with alternate costumes for Oni Lady and Okuni, different haori coats for Musashi, and a five-track digital mini-soundtrack.
Pre-ordering any edition before September 25, 2026, grants early access to bonus items. These include charms and cosmetic weapon skins for Musashi's sword.
Following the change in the release date, Capcom has announced that digital pre-orders made through Nintendo Switch 2 stores will be canceled. Customers who pre-ordered digitally on Switch 2 will need to place a new preorder to secure the game and any included bonuses.
Capcom clarified that physical pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 are unaffected and will continue as planned for the new release date.
To reorder digitally on Switch 2, users should open the Nintendo eShop either on the console or via a web browser, search for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, select their preferred edition, and complete the pre-order to ensure receipt of the Early Adopter Bonus items.
Patients on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC do not need to take any action, as existing pre-orders on those platforms will transfer to the new release date without issues.
Why Capcom Moved The Release Date
Capcom has not given a specific reason for changing the release date. Originally scheduled for September 25, 2026, Onimusha: Way of the Sword would have launched alongside several major titles, including Control: Resonant, the console version of Dune Awakening, and Silent Hill: Townfall.
The new release date is set for September 4, 2026, positioning the game against Orbitals and The Blood of Dawnwalker, both of which are new intellectual property releases without any established franchise history. This change aims to provide a less crowded launch window for Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled to launch on September 4, 2026. The game will be available on multiple platforms and storefronts, including:
- Xbox Series X|S,
- PlayStation 5,
- Nintendo Switch 2,
- PC through Windows, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
A playable demo can be accessed on all platforms for those interested in trying the game before making a pre-order.
What Players Should Watch Before Launch
Capcom has not announced any changes to editions, pricing, or bonus content beyond the delay in the release date. Users should verify that their digital pre-orders for Switch 2 are placed again if they were made before the date change.
To qualify for the Early Adopter Bonus, pre-orders must be completed before September 25, 2026, although the game will have already launched by then. Watch for platform-specific pre-load timelines as the release date approaches.
Capcom has not provided details on download sizes, pre-load windows, or day-one patches. Users should monitor platform storefronts for those details leading up to the September 4 release.
