WhatsApp Opens Username Reservations Ahead of Later 2026 Launch

Meta has begun allowing users to reserve usernames on WhatsApp this week. Once the feature launches later in 2026, users will be able to claim their preferred name.

According to the WhatsApp blog, usernames will enable users to start conversations without sharing their phone number.

Reservations are being opened early to give WhatsApp's more than three billion users the chance to secure their handles. The full username feature is not yet available and will be rolled out gradually over the coming months.

Meta mentions that users will receive a notification in WhatsApp when usernames are available in their country.

What WhatsApp Usernames Will Change

Once launched, usernames will allow users to start new conversations without exposing their phone number. They will also help keep their phone number private in group chats such as parent groups or event-based chats. Additionally, usernames provide a consistent identity that others can use to reach someone for the first time.

Meta explains: "Once we launch usernames, when you message a person or business for the first time they will no longer see your phone number if you have enabled your username."

The company describes the feature as a privacy enhancement. There will be no directory of usernames to browse, and no automatic suggestions will be provided. Other users will need to know the exact username to initiate a first conversation.

Along with usernames, Meta is introducing an optional username key that users must know before they can send a first message.

The key is intended to give users more control over who can contact them through the username system, reducing the chances of unwanted contact from people who guess or find a username elsewhere.

Meta has not yet provided details on how the key is generated, shared, or reset. More information is expected as the feature is rolled out.

How To Reserve A WhatsApp Username

Meta explains that creators, small businesses, and organizations seeking a consistent presence across its platforms can now claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp.

This option allows account holders to unify their identities across Meta's messaging and social apps. The company has also provided details on how to claim an Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp through its FAQ pages.

Reservation is available on the latest version of WhatsApp. To reserve a username:

  1. Open the latest WhatsApp on Android or iPhone
  2. Go to Settings, tap Account, then select Username.
  3. Enter your preferred username and confirm.

Meta also introduced a username generator in the app to help users choose a unique one.

Users with older versions of WhatsApp should update through the App Store or Google Play Store to access the reservation feature. The process is the same on both platforms.

When WhatsApp Usernames Will Become Available

The username feature is not yet available in the public or beta versions of WhatsApp. Reservations opened this week ahead of a planned launch later in 2026.

Meta has not specified an exact release date and has only said that the rollout will happen gradually over the coming months, with country-specific notifications sent through the app once it is available.

Users who reserve a username now will keep their reservation through the launch period. Meta has not provided details on how long a reservation remains valid if it is not linked to an active account or how disputes over reserved usernames will be managed.

Because reservations open early, Meta has not fully addressed common questions such as whether reserved usernames can be transferred, reset after launch, or how to regenerate the username key.

Users should monitor WhatsApp's official channels for updates before assuming that reservation behaviors will be the same as on other Meta platforms. To confirm when usernames become active in their country, users can check the WhatsApp blog and in-app notifications.
