Google Adds Gemini Voice Features to Gmail, Docs, and Keep for Hands-Free Tasks

Google is introducing new voice features powered by Gemini for Gmail, Docs, and Keep, allowing users to carry out tasks by speaking, as stated in a Google announcement.

The apps are given new features that make use of the Gemini Audio models, with Gmail introducing conversational inbox search, Docs receiving the ability to draft documents without having to use their hands, and Keep bringing in voice-driven note organisation.

This week, the new features will be made available to subscribers of Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra. Business customers using Workspace will receive them shortly, too. It all depends on the product.

Google demonstrated its Gemini Audio models for the first time at its I/O event in Workspace.

Google Gemini Live Features for Gmail, Docs, and Keep

Gmail Live is introducing conversational search to the inbox. Rather than having to go through the threads manually, users can pose questions like "What is my flight's gate number?" or "What is happening at my kid's school this week?" and Gmail Live will search through the inbox to give the answers.

With Docs Live users are able to create documents by using speech. The tool can arrange their ideas, give the document a structure, and if permitted, retrieve information from Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web. Google states that it helps users reach a first draft more quickly and also aids in adjusting the tone.

With Keep Live, users are able to talk their way through the process of capturing, organizing, and improving their ideas so that they end up with structured and actionable notes. This builds on Keep's normal function of making quick notes by converting spoken brain dumps into structured notes.

This week the features are being rolled out. Gmail Live and Keep Live are available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, whereas Docs Live is available to Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Docs Live and the other two features will soon be available to business customers using Google Workspace. It is not yet known when the rollout will be completed, so access may differ between accounts within the applicable subscription levels.
