iPhone Duo Owners Report L-Shaped Screen Cracks Within 8-Hours of Purchase

Owners of Apple's new iPhone Duo foldable are reporting cracked inner displays within hours of purchase, with photos showing the same L-shaped break on units in the US, Australia, and China. Apple has not issued a statement on the problem, but owners say Apple Stores have been granting full replacements for the $2,000 iPhone.

The reports started circulating on social media shortly after the iPhone Duo went on sale. A dedicated iPhone Duo community already has multiple threads with pictures of damaged screens, and comparable images have appeared on X and enthusiast forums.

How the iPhone Duo Screen Damage Appears

Most of the photos show a break running along the fold, with a bright line of pixels extending from it toward the right edge of the screen. Together, the two lines form a large white L shape that stretches from one end of the internal display to the middle.

One owner in Australia says the crack appeared six hours after buying the phone, after opening it fewer than 20 times. The owner reports feeling something move along the hinge beneath the screen before hearing a crack, and says there were no marks on the display surface or the outer hinge that would suggest debris had been caught. Another owner says a similar crack appeared before the initial setup was even finished.

Some of the images from China appear to show demo units in stores, though the circumstances behind most of the photos are unclear. One owner suggests that the tension springs that hold the iPhone Duo open at different angles are responsible. Apple has not confirmed a cause, and reviewers who folded the phone thousands of times during testing reported no cracks.

The Australian owner first contacted Apple's phone support, which offered an express replacement but required a hold for the full price of the phone and could not give a delivery date. Staff at an Apple Store granted a full replacement on the spot.

Repairs outside of warranty are expensive. Without AppleCare+, Apple's listed repair and replacement prices for the iPhone Duo range from $49 to $1,499, depending on the part.

Supply is another constraint. Apple has said demand for the phone outpaces supply, and some orders are already pushed into January 2027 delivery windows, which could make replacement units harder to obtain in the coming weeks.

iPhone Duo owners who notice a crack or a bright line along the fold should take these steps:

  1. Photograph the damage and note when it appeared and how often the phone had been opened.
  2. Visit an Apple Store in person, where owners report receiving immediate replacements.
  3. Expect that phone support may require a hold for the full device price on an express replacement.
  4. Check AppleCare+ coverage before paying for any out of warranty repair.

It is not yet clear how widespread the screen failures are, and Apple has not said whether its replacement approach will change as it works through production constraints on the iPhone Duo.
