Microsoft Confirms Edge 156 Update Broke Attachment Opening in New Outlook and Rolls Out a Fix

Microsoft has confirmed that an update to Microsoft Edge 156 stopped some users of New Outlook from opening email attachments. According to Microsoft's service health advisory EX1528992 for Exchange Online, the Edge update "unintentionally enabled an unnecessary configuration," and the company has started rolling out a fix that disables it again.

The fix does not arrive instantly. Microsoft expects the rollout to take around 12 hours, and affected users have to close and reopen New Outlook before the change takes effect.

How the Edge 156 Bug Breaks Attachments in New Outlook

Users hit by the bug lose the "Open" option for file attachments in New Outlook. Some also see an error message stating that the file cannot be opened, together with an instruction to restart Outlook. After that error appears, the "Open" option disappears from the attachment menu entirely.

Microsoft confirmed the problem on the afternoon of October 28 and began deploying the fix early on October 29. The company has not explained what the "unnecessary configuration" is, or why a change in a browser update was able to affect how a separate mail client handles attachments.

The dependency is the notable part. New Outlook relies on components that ship with Edge, so a configuration change in the browser was enough to break a core email function.

The incident arrives as Edge gains ground on the desktop. Statcounter data puts the browser at almost 15 percent of the desktop market last month, up from around 10 percent for much of the year.

Microsoft's Fix Rollout and the Save As Workaround

Outlook Classic does not appear to be affected, according to the EX1528992 advisory. For New Outlook users who cannot wait for the fix, the workaround is to save the attachment first and open it outside the mail client:

  1. Select the attachment in the affected email in New Outlook.
  2. Choose "Save As" instead of "Open" and save the file to a local folder.
  3. Open the saved file manually from that folder.
  4. Once the fix has reached the account, close New Outlook completely and start it again to restore the "Open" option.

The workaround adds a step for every attachment, and saved copies stay on the device until they are deleted manually. Administrators can follow the status of the fix under EX1528992 in the service health section of the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Microsoft has not said whether every affected tenant will have the fix within the 12-hour window, and it has not shared details about the Edge configuration that caused the problem.
