Google has officially begun offering its white-label streaming technology to other companies, starting with telecommunications giant AT&T being able to stream the demo for action adventure title Batman: Arkham Knight.
Earlier this year, with the departure of division head Jade Raymond, Stadia has basically shut down its efforts to create first-party developed games. Despite its short-lived tenure, Stadia has produced four original titles in total: GYLT, Orcs Must Die! 3, Submerged: Hidden Depths, and Outcasters. It has also been announced that Stadia would now basically work with partners to offer its game-streaming service. In essence, doing everything that Stadia does without the namesake.
It has also been said that Stadia will now focus its efforts on making sure that more developers get their titles to work on the streaming platform. One way that would work is through the Stadia Makers program. This program done in partnership with Unity will provide “experienced independent game developers” with technical assistance, free development hardware, and funding.
As for this free demo, Warner Bros. and AT&T have partnered to bring Batman: Arkham Knight to current AT&T Wireless customers. Users can now stream gameplay directly from their Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser. It’s important to note that this would only work on desktop and laptop devices, not smartphones even though it is currently being advertised as an AT&T wireless promotion. Also, no mention of the Stadia can be seen on AT&T’s site for the promotion. Expectedly, it has not been indicated whether players will be able to use the Stadia controller for the game, but using a USB or Bluetooth mouse and keyboard or controller would work.
Those who will be playing the demo will be able to play it in 1080p. Currently, 4k resolution gameplay is still locked for Stadia Pro subscribers. It is also a good thing to note that this title isn’t actually available for Stadia subscribers. We’ll just have to wait and see whether this free demo offering is a sign that the game will soon be added to the Stadia library.
In other news for the game streaming service, recently it has slashed its revenue share as a way to attract more developers and also launched the Stadia for the Chromecast with Google TV. Lastly, with this update, Google has permanently bundled Stadia Premiere with its puck-shaped ChromeCast and the Stadia controller to entice more players, or even users within their ecosystems to the Stadia platform.
