Intel Alder Lake-P Has An Interesting Correlation Between Its SKU Names and Clock Speeds

Intel is currently enjoying temporary domination in the desktop CPU market with its Alder Lake processors and the company is looking forward to launching the mobile variants at CES 2022. Alder Lake mobile will come in two flavors, Alder Lake-M and Alder Lake-P with the latter being the more powerful, high-end option and the former being reserved for more budget offerings.

We already know a lot about these mobile Alder Lake chips thanks to various leaks and reports (thank you Benchleaks), and we even have a general idea of how these are gonna perform. The on-paper specifics are still a little bit blurry, but one important part of the specs has leaked in its entirety and is almost certainly confirmed due to several Geekbench benchmarks.

I’m talking about the base clock speeds. Now, on any other given day, this would be quite an interesting metric for us to compare and talk about, but that has already been done to death by every other publication in the world. No, it’s actually the somewhat hilarious mutuality between Alder Lake’s nomenclature and its speed that is the focus today.

As of right now, we know that Intel is planning to launch three Alder Lake-P CPUs in January of next year, with more possibly coming down the line. However, that is unlikely as Alder Lake-P is most probably limited to only these three SKUs as its meant for the high-end market while Alder Lake-M will serve the rest of the population.

Intel Alder Lake roadmap, Mobile is most likely Alder Lake-P with Ultra Mobile being Alder Lake-M | Intel

Regardless, all three of the Alder Lake-P processors share the comical parallels in their names. Those three being the Core i9-12900HK, the Core i7-12800H, and the Core i7-12700H. So, what are the clock speeds of these three CPUs? Well, now that they’ve been everything but officially confirmed from Intel themselves, I’m glad you asked.

  • Core i9-12900HK: 2.9 GHz
  • Core i7-12800H: 2.8 GHz
  • Core i7-12700H: 2.7 GHz

See how the 12900HK has a base clock speed of 2.9 Ghz, the 12800H has a base clock speed of 2.8 Ghz, and the 12700H carries a 2.7 Ghz base clock speed. You see the parallels yet? Obviously, these are some pretty powerful chips and are purportedly more capable than any Ryzen offerings on the market. But, AMD is also expected to launch its next-generation Ryzen 6000Rembrandt” mobile chips at CES 2022, so only time will tell who reigns superior.
