Back at Computex 2021, AMD unveiled 3D V-Cache to the world. A new chiplet design that puts more cache on top of a core complex via SRAM allowing for, in theory, drastically improved performance and latency. So far we didn’t exactly know when AMD will actually debut this solution commercially. Our best guess was Zen4 “Raphael” or Ryzen 6000 desktop but it seems that AMD has finally confirmed the details.
Videocardz got their hands on a leaked slide from AMD’s upcoming CES 2022 presentation where we can clearly see the timeline of AMD’s upcoming advancements in desktop computing. The slide confirms that AMD will debut 3D V-Cache in a new Zen3-based CPU first before making its way over to Zen4 later down the line.
Ryzen 7 5800X3D will be the first-ever Ryzen processor to come with the 3D V-Cache design, releasing in Spring 2022, or the second quarter of 2022. According to AMD, the chip will offer “extreme gaming performance“. It will be quite interesting to see how the chip fares against the competition and existing Ryzen CPUs as it’s essentially just a refreshed 5800X with more cache.
Perhaps AMD is using the 5800X3D as testing ground for 3D V-Cache, seeing if the tech is ready and performing as expected in a commercial product before it eventually releases full-scale on Zen4 in the second half of 2022. Speaking of which, the leaked slide also reveals that the 5800X3D will be instantly followed up by next-gen Ryzen.
Ryzen 7000 “Raphael”
Ryzen 7000, codenamed “Raphael” is rumored to bring massive improvements all around in almost every department thanks to the new architecture. It will be manufactured on TSMC‘s 5nm process node and require brand new socket, AM5. AM5 is also said to launch side-by-side Ryzen 7000 and will be the first Ryzen socket to shift from a PGA layout to LGA.
Raphael will feature new Zen4 cores and RDNA 2 graphics, making it the first mainstream Ryzen desktop release to have an iGPU akin to Intel. AMD will package Ryzen 7000 CPUs using 3D V-Cache as well. Raphael is also said to bump up the max core count from the current 16-core limit to a new high on laptops, to better compete with Intel’s Alder Lake or its subsequent follow-ups.
AMD will make this information official in just a few hours at their CES 2022 show where we expect to see Ryzen 6000 mobile APUs accompanied with some new updates on AMD GPUs. The show begins at 7 AM PT, January 4th, 2022. That being said, AMD’s lineup of 2022 APUs has already leaked just hours before the show.
