Samsung Exynos 2200 with RDNA 2 Graphics Will Be Unveiled At CES 2022

After long-winded speculation, rumors, and leaks, we finally have an update from Samsung on the upcoming Exynos 2200 SoC. The processor, developed in conjunction with AMD is set to be a new breakthrough for the South-Korean giant as it aims to lift its in-house Exynos brand from the sidelines into the main playing field. Exynos 2200 was announced last year and since then has seen countless reports indicating both good and bad, but no concrete release in sight.

Recently, that cloud fizzles away at last. Samsung Exynos’s Twitter handle posted a video titled “Playtime is over” with a caption telling us to stay tuned for Exynos 2200. Along with that, we got a date for when the chip will finally be made official after its year-long absence. That date is 11th January, 2022. So, we’ll likely be seeing it at CES 2022.

For those unaware, this is a big deal for Samsung, and for the mobile platform in general. Yes, we’re sure to see CPU improvements in the new Exynos 2200 and it will likely give the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 a run for its money, but the real intriguer here is that GPU. Exynos 2200 will be powered by AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics. The same graphics architecture that powers the PlayStation 5 and current-gen Radeon RX 6000 GPUs.

This will bring along a vast improvement in the graphical prowess of the Exynos chip and the AMD name will further bolster its image. That being said, don’t expect some miracles here as this still is a mobile phone which has to contain everything in a mobile form factor. So, cooling is limited and thermals can become an issue if the chip is pushed too much.

The RDNA 2 GPU inside the Exynos 2200 is said to feature only 8 Compute Units (CU) which have a total of 384 Stream Processors. In other words, that’s not very powerful, in a vacuum. But, keeping mind that this is meant for a mobile device, it could prove to be a generational leap if Samsung and AMD have really optimized the GPU to take full advantage. Moreover, the RDNA 2 graphics will also enable ray-tracing on Exynos 2200-powered devices which will improve the overall gaming experience, though at a notable cost of reduced FPS.

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series and most likely the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE will mark the debut of Samsung Exynos 2200 where the international variants of this phone will ship with the company’s in-house silicone, and the US variants will be paired with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. It remains to be seen how this chip stacks up against the competition, in particular the Apple Bionic series which has been notoriously chart-topping since the start.

Where we stand

Current leaks and reports indicate both good and bad things, with the biggest concern being the efficiency. It is said that ARM‘s new X2 core inside the Exynos 2200, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, runs hot and consumes a lot of power while giving only a small bump in performance. However, there are essentially no reports on the graphics side of things but this being AMD’s first foray into handheld mobile graphics does put them in a in the spotlight of expectations.

The biggest improvement will be seen in AI and machine learning where the chip will really get to shine. Leaks suggest that there will be an over 100% increase in AI chops with the Exynos 2200. The CPU improvements in comparison are miniscule while the GPU will see a decent bump thanks to the AMD partnership. Apart from Samsung, AMD is also said to be in works of forming a joint venture with MediaTek, which will further rivet their footing in the mobile sector.

As it stands right now, the Exynos 2200 is an interesting spot where it doesn’t seem like its truly a next-gen product based off the leaked benchmarks, but it still has enough of an improvement plus the new AMD name that it can market itself as such. After the SoC finally launches on 11th January, 2022, we’ll have to wait and see how the real-world numbers hold up against promises and rivals to see if Samsung really was able to deliver.
