In September of last year, Sony acquired Firesprite and took it under its PlayStation Studios umbrella. So far, Firesprite has currently worked on only one PlayStation game and that is the upcoming VR spinoff Horizon: Call of the Mountain that the studio is co-developing with Guerilla Games. Now, it seems like the developer is looking to start work on its next big project for the PlayStation 5 and it’s an interesting one.
A job listing on Firesprite’s website was spotted by a user on Resetra for a “Narrative Director” for an upcoming horror game made in Unreal Engine 5. The job listing read:
We are looking for a Narrative Director to join our development team for a AAA narrative driven horror-adventure game in Unreal 5. The Narrative Director is responsible for the project storytelling, helping establish & consider the game’s universe and lore, with responsibility for the quality implementation of narrative content for project milestones and ultimately the game’s release.
While that description confirms that Firesprite is working on a new horror game, most likely an exclusive for PlayStation 5, we don’t know if it will be a brand new IP or based on an existing franchise under Sony’s belt. This is certainly an exciting little leak of sorts as PlayStation has largely been devoid of a big name triple-A horror exclusive since Until Dawn came out in 2015.
This news was initially broken by VGC, who goes on to note that Firesprite is also rumored to have taken over the development of the upcoming, unannounced Twisted Metal reboot from Lucid Games. This is further backed by numerous other job listings at Firesprite for what’s being called a “multiplayer action” game on their website. There is one specific role that says “Senior Designer: Vehicle Handling” that all but gives away that this could, in fact, be the unannounced Twisted Metal reboot.
It should be mentioned that NBC is currently developing a live-action Twisted Metal series at its streaming service platform, Peacock. The series is set to star Anthony Mackie of MCU fame and is being penned by Michael Jonathan, who most recently worked on Cobra Kai. Sony may be looking to announce the Twisted Metal reboot around the time the series debuts, but that’s just pure speculation.
