AMD’s Next-Gen Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs with 3D V-Cache Technology Likely to Release in 2023

AMD‘s upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D has already been reviewed with nearly every outlet praising the chip for its chart-topping performance at an unbelievable price. Clearly, the company’s first attempt at incorporating the 3D V-Cache technology into a chip has proved to be massively successful and now it’s only a matter of time before we see this technology adopted into more and more processors across the board.

The 5800X3D was just a simple Ryzen 7 5800X with extra cache stacked on top of the core chiplets. Therefore, it was still a Ryzen 5000 part with Zen3 cores. As we all know, Zen4 is right around the corner and AMD has officially announced that it’ll be hitting store shelves in the second half of the year. Rumor has it that 3D V-Cache will be used to power next-gen Ryzen 7000 CPUs as the technology would become a sort of default in that lineup.

AMD has said that wide implementation of 3D V-Cache depends on the success and acclaim of the technology, and with 5800X3D being touted as the best gaming CPU out right now, we can only assume that AMD got the message. So, if the company’s first 3D V-Cache experiment worked wonders and Zen4 is the perfect opportunity to build upon that success then surely we’ll be seeing cached up Ryzen 7000 CPUs later this year, right?

Zen4 3D in 2023

Even though it makes the most sense for Ryzen 7000 CPUs, codenamed “Raphael” to launch with 3D V-Cache SKUs, a new rumor from renowned leaker Greymon55 states otherwise. According to the leaker, Zen4 CPUs will launch as is on the new AM5 platform without any 3D V-Cache parts. Instead, AMD will release Ryzen 7000 CPUs with 3D V-Cache next year, in 2023, after the people have gotten enough of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

As you can see in the tweet above, Greymon makes it clear that any Zen4 SKUs with 3D V-Cache have to wait for Zen 3D production to cease first. Right now, AMD has only one production line for Zen 3D, and that one is operating at maximum capacity. Wccftech‘s sources told the outlet that the Red Team increased 5800X3D production from 20,000 units per quarter to 50,000 units per quarter to meet demand and phase out Zen3D.

AMD did this to make sure that they can quickly transition to next-gen parts as soon as possible. Once AMD has reached their production target for the 5800X3D, the production line will be free to now move on to, potentially, Zen4 3D. Greymon adds to this by mentioning how the current 3D packaging devices for the stacked cache can easily move to Zen4 without any hassle and production can commence right away. 

Ryzen 7000 with 3D V-Cache is coming

Taking all that into account, we can expect AMD to end production of Ryzen 7 5800X3D by the last quarter of this year. Then, it can begin production for Zen4 3D SKUs in Q1 2023. This would allow AMD to launch Zen 4 3D V-Cache parts in the third quarter of 2023. That means the launch lineup of Zen 4 aka Ryzen 7000 will only include the “X” parts, just like Ryzen 5000, and they’ll be accompanied by the new X670 motherboards for the AM5 platform.

If were to make some sort of wish list, the number one thing on my mind, at least, would be a sub-$300 3D V-Cache processor in the Zen4 lineup. Overclocking support and higher clock speeds would also be nice but AMD has already explained why both of those are a bit difficult to achieve with this new technology. Not just that, but higher cache sizes and 3D V-Cache moving to, say, a 16-core SKU would be cool to see, too. But, first, let’s hope we all can get our hands on a 5800X3D when it launches on April 20th
