PlayStation Plus is in a bit of a weird place right now as it’s dangling in between the old PS Plus and the all-new PS Plus with a transition about to take place next month. The PS Plus we know today will remain as is, price and benefits unchanged, just a new name: PlayStation Plus Essential. More importantly, it will become a part of the new tiered PS Plus service where it will act as the base tier, upon which the Extra and Premium tiers will build upon.
Despite that, the month of May is still expected to be a normal month for PS Plus users, in fact, it’s most likely the last month of PS Plus before the majority of us transition over to the new tiered version in June. As such, the free monthly games for May have customarily leaked. The report comes from Dealslab, a reliable source with an excellent track record of getting the past 6 months of free PS Plus games right before they were announced.
As always, three free games will be made available to subscribers, this time two of which are cross-generation between the PS4 and the PS5, while one is PS4-only. The three games are: FIFA 22 (PS4 and PS5), Tribes of Midgard (PS4 and PS5), and Curse of the Dead Gods (PS4). It’s hard to say if this lineup is better than last month’s lukewarm showing at the moment, though FIFA 22 definitely sweetens the deal a bit.
FIFA 22 (PS4 and PS5)
The most notable name here is FIFA 22. Yes, that’s right, EA SPORTS’ FIFA 22. The de-facto soccer, maybe even sports, game out there is going to be a part of next month’s free PS Plus games lineup. This will mark the first time in history a FIFA game has been given away for free with PS Plus. Whether that is enough to entice you or not is entirely up to the player.
What more do I even need to say here? It’s the latest and greatest from EA’s sports division. It has all the drawbacks of the past few years’ of FIFA games and might just be a glorified DLC, but hey, that meme has been outdone to death at this point. For what it’s worth, getting a FIFA game for free is not a bad deal at all, it’s a pretty great time-passer (pun intended), especially with friends, and it can quickly turn intense even if you aren’t fond of soccer as much.Tribes of Midgard (PS4 and PS5)
Moving on, the second cross-generation game part of next month’s PlayStation Plus lineup is Tribes of Midgard, an action-RPG with a emphasis on co-op gameplay. It is a unique blend of action, survival, and mystery, and features various roguelite elements. The game is played from an isometric perspective, as well. As the name suggests, the game is based in Midgard, aka Earth in Norse mythology and follows the player exploring multiple villages.
The story of the game reaches as far back as Ragnarök, arguably the most significant event in Norse mythology. In the game, you can form tribes of your own of up to 10 players to defend your village from the relentless onslaught of deadly monsters and other dangerous beings. The game is developed by Norsfell and was released back in 2019 for PS4 and PC, then later for PS5 as well. And now it’s free for PS Plus users next month.
Curse of the Dead Gods (PS4 only)
Last up, coincidentally (or maybe deliberately?) another isometric action game, Curse of the Dead Gods was release back in 2019 by Passtech Games. It is more of a traditional roguelite that dabbles in some interesting combat mechanics that help you fight the horde of menacing enemies and foes throughout the different dungeons you explore and uncover in the game.
The game has a very interesting mechanic involving the “Curse meter“. It is basically the evil version of a normal health meter, except it grows when you take part in devilish activities, such as buying items from your blood instead of gold. The curse meter increases every time you enter a new room or encounter a new adversary in the dark. The curse meter hinders the player’s abilities and adds an extra layer of challenge (and fun!) to the overall gameplay.
PlayStation Plus May 2022 lineup
That wraps it up for the May 2022 lineup of PlayStation Plus free games. Obviously, this is still a leak and not an official announcement so take it with a grain of salt. However, given Dealslab’s track record, we can pretty much be sure when we say this is legit. FIFA 22 is clearly the heavy-lifter here and it remains to be seen whether people will warm up to the other two games, or will this go down as another underwhelming month for free PS Plus games.
